
Martinez Drives In Winning Run to Lift Eagles Past UConn, 5-4

Emme Martinez RBI double in the eighth gives BC the win.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Sophomore Emme Martinez knocked in the winning run in the eighth inning as Boston College defeated Connecticut, 5-4, at the Burrill Family Field in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. BC is now 12-23 overall and will host Fairfield Wednesday at the Harrington Athletics Village (4 p.m.). UConn is now 15-21.
Freshman pitcher Susannah Anderson went the distance and picked up her fifth victory. She went eight innings, gave up nine hits, four runs and struck out four in the win.
Offensively, Boston College had nine hits, two doubles but left 10 runners on base. Freshman Gianna Randazza went 2-for-4 with a run and a double. Freshman Ellie Mataya went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman Kristin Giery went 2-for-3. Martinez had a double to center in the eight and two RBI, while Jenna Ergle pitched in with two RBI.
The Eagles scored in the first when Ergle was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. UConn tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the first inning but BC responded. Gianna Randazza singled to left and advanced to second on a bunt single by Giery. Randazza scored when Martinez reached on an infield error for a 2-1 lead.
The Huskies tied the game 2-2 in the fourth on a home run by Olivia Sappington. Both teams scored in the fifth inning and went into the seventh inning tied at 3-3.
Senior Allyson Moore singled with one out in the seventh. Britney Richardson would pinch run for Moore and score on an RBI single to right by Ellie Mataya for a 4-3 lead. Â UConn came back when Alexis Lemus hit an RBI double to tie the game at 4-4 and send the game into the eighth.
Randazza opened the inning with a double down the left field line. Maddison Hamilton would pinch run for Randazza and move to third on a sacrifice by Giery. Â With two out, Martinez doubled to center for a 5-4 lead.
Anderson shut the door in the eight as the first batter, Ashlee Dahman to line out to third. Anderson gave up a single but struck out Ashley Esty for two down. Freshman shortstop Kennedy Labshere would field a ground ball and throw out UConn's last batter for the win.
