Eagles Drop 8-3 Decision to UMass

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College softball team fell to UMass, 8-3, in a mid-week non-conference game at the Harrington Athletics Village. The Eagles dropped to 10-17 overall, while UMass improved to 13-13.

Boston College went up 1-0 as freshman Ellie Mataya (2-for-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI, 2 stolen bases) scored on an error by UMass. BC gave the run back as UMass scored on an error in the third inning.

Freshman Gianna Boccagno (2-for-3, 1 RBI) singled to right center scoring Mataya to give BC a 2-1 lead after three innings.

The Minutewomen would push three runs past the plate in the fourth inning with two out. BC gave up a two-run double to Melissa Garcia to take a 4-2 lead. BC responded with one run in the fourth, but UMass would break the game open in the sixth and seventh innings.

Kaitlyn Stovinoha hit a one-run triple in the sixth. She scored on a single by Jackie Kelley to give UMass a 6-3 lead. The Minutewomen would tack on two more runs in the seventh for an 8-3 lead.

BC's offense stumbled as UMass pitcher Kiara Oliver went the distance. Her final two innings she sat down six straight batters. The Eagle batters grounded out in five of the last six at bats. Oliver would get the other batter with a strikeout for her fifth win of the season.

Freshman Susannah Anderson (4-9) started for BC and went four innings. She gave up four hits and four uns. Sophomore CC Cook came in for two innings and surrendered four runs on three hits. Freshman Camryn Dolby pitched the final inning for BC.
