The lacrosse team heads to Syracuse for the first conference matchup of 2019
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 1 Boston College women's lacrosse team hits the road for their first ACC competition of the 2019 season to take on No. 10/11 Syracuse. The matchup is set for Saturday, Feb. 16 with first draw at noon.
Both teams are undefeated thus far this season, as the Eagles took down Boston University in impressive fashion, 20-6, in their opening contest last weekend in Newton. The Orange are 2-0 after taking down both UConn (Feb. 8) and Binghamton (Feb. 12). Â
So far this season, Syracuse has out-scored their opponents 33-11. Emily Hawryschuk, last season's top-scorer for the Orange, leads the team with five goals and three assists over their two contests. Goalkeeper Asa Goldstock currently sits at fourth in goals-against average in the conference, allowing 10 goals over two games.
The Eagles exploded offensively in their 2019 debut as seven different players recorded multiple points. Graduate student Kenzie Kent wasted no time in her return, finding the back of the net five times and tallying four assists for nine points in her first appearance on turf since the 2017 National Championship game. Junior Cara Urbank recorded a career-best four goals, while senior Sam Apuzzo notched three of her own – two of which were just 12 seconds apart. Junior Sheila Rietano and senior Taylor Walker each added two goals for the Eagles. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Daly notched six saves before sophomore Abbey Ngai earned time between the pipes to wrap up the contest.
The teams last met for the final regular season game of the 2018 season. The nail-biter of a regular-season finale was decided by a tie breaking goal by Sam Apuzzo, who found the back of the net with just one second remaining in regulation to lift the Eagles up, 13-12, and secure their first-ever ACC Regular Season title.
The contest with Syracuse will be broadcast via the ACC Network Extra beginning at noon. The Eagles return home to take on Harvard on Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. in Newton.
