Boccagno Goes Deep in Loss at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The Boston College softball team wrapped up its trip to Texas with a 9-1 loss to the No. 16 Texas Longhorns Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened:

The Longhorns exploded for eight runs in the first inning. Their first three batters reached, then Shannon Rhodes lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to give Texas the early lead. With a first and third situation, the Longhorns sent the runner from first, and a wild throw to the bag at second allowed the runner from third to score. On the very next pitch, Mary Iakopo sent a fastball over the center field fence to give Texas a 4-0 lead. The Longhorns weren't done there. After loading the bases on two singles and a walk, the next two Longhorn batters reached on a hit-by-pitch, and a walk, to push two more runs across the board.

Gianna Boccagno led off the top of the second with her second home run of the tournament, to cut the Eagles deficit to 8-1. The Eagles had lead off singles in thethird and fourth, but both innings ended with stranded runners.

The game ended in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Longhorns threatening with runners on first and third. The runner took off for second, and the throw allowed the runner from third to score.
