Eagles, Friars Battle to 1-1 Overtime Tie
August 31, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Chavez Borrelli made a career-high nine saves, including three in overtime
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second consecutive game, the Boston College men's soccer team played into overtime, coming out with 1-1 tie with Providence on Friday night at Chapey Field. Sophomore goalkeeper Antonio Chavez Borrelli made a career-high nine saves, including three in overtime, to preserve the tie.
The Eagles played the final 15 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime with 10 men after Beto Luna was issued a red card in the 75th minute.
The game had a chippy beginning – with nine total fouls in the first nine minutes – but it benefited BC the best, as Luna was able to stake the visitors to the early lead with a goal in the seventh minute. The physicality continued after Luna's goal and the teams traded yellow cards midway through the opening stanza – Klisman Sousa for Providence and Simon Enstrom for BC – with the final first half foul tally standing at 12 for the Friars and nine for the Eagles.
A 32nd minute goal by the hosts sent the teams into the break deadlocked, 1-1.
After a relatively stagnate first 15 minutes of the second stanza, Providence reeled off three shots and earned two corners in the span of two minutes before Simon Fisher's shot hit the post. The 75th minute saw Luna be issued a red card and the Eagles were forced to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match.
Providence had the lead in shots (21-5) and shots on goal (11-2). Colin Miller had one stops for Providence. Boston College was whistled for 18 fouls to 17 for Providence while the Friars were assessed three yellow cards and the Eagles two.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Sept. 7, when the team kicks off conference play by hosting Clemson at the Newton Campus Fields. The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, which is available on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
