Eagles Battle Back to Tie Terriers, 3-3
August 27, 2018 | Men's Soccer
BC scored three goals in the second half to force OT
NEWTON, Mass. – Faced with a two-goal second half deficit, the Boston College men's soccer team fought back to tie Boston University twice in the final 30 minutes on Monday night at the Newton Campus Fields. The game between the crosstown rivals ultimately ended in a 3-3 tie – the first tie in the series since 1999. Simon Enstrom's goal with 3:21 remaining had completed the Eagles' second comeback of the evening to force overtime.
The teams traded corners early on but neither squad produced much offensively in the first 40 minutes of the game – until the Terriers scored with less than two minutes to play in the opening half. That goal was a predictor for what would unfold in the second half, as seven minutes into the second stanza, BU went up 2-0 on Matt McDonnell's second goal of the night.
But two goals from the Eagles – off of the heads of Lasse Lehmann and Abe Bibas – tied it back up with 20 minutes to play. The game's third lead change came when McDonnell finished off his hat trick with nine minutes to play.
Down but not out, Simon Enstrom's third goal of the season sent the game to overtime. The captain nearly won it in the extra time with a header at the right post but William Bonnelyche made the punching save into the crossbar. Antonio Chavez Borrelli preserved the tie with a diving, punching save to his left late in the first overtime period.
Borrelli finished with two saves as did Joe Fryatt, who played the first half for BC. Bonnelyche made five saves for the Terriers. The Eagles held the final edge in shots on goal, 8-7, and the Terriers had the edge in corners, 6-2.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Aug. 31, when the team travels to Providence for a 7 p.m. game with the Friars.
