About the Eagles
- After an idle week, BC gets back on the field sporting an overall record of 16-30; having last played on Sunday, May 6 and recording a 2-1 win over Louisville at home.
- The Eagles are 7-15 at home this season and 9-10 in against non-conference competition.
- Freshman left fielder Chris Galland is hitting a team-leading .329. He has swiped a BC single-season record 28 bases on 30 attempts. Galland has scored 35 runs and clubbed 10 doubles.
- Senior shortstop Jake Palomaki is hitting .316 with a team-best .453 slugging percentage. He reached base five times in the Eagles' series vs. Louisville to push his career total to 370. Palomaki sits just one back of Jason Delaney's (2002-05) program record of 371 times reached base in a career.
- Sophomore second baseman Brian Dempsey is the third BC hitter over .300 at .311. He drove in the winning run vs. Louisville (5/6) in the eighth with his 17th RBI of the year.
- Maine has won five in a row, all in league play, to enter Tuesday at 17-29 overall and fifth place in America East at 11-10.
- Earlier this season, the Black Bears took one of three, winning the series opener, at No. 24 Miami (3/2).
- Right fielder Hernan Sardinas and shortstop Jeremy Pena lead the Maine lineup with .317 and .308 batting averages, respectively. Sardinas is slugging .506 with 14 doubles and six home runs, while Pena has scored a team-high 43 runs.
- Third baseman Dannay Casals has belted 11 home runs and owns a .294/.406/.562 slash line.
Last Time They Met
- BC erased a five-run deficit with a six-run eighth inning to prevail over Maine, 9-8, at Shea Field on May 16, 2017.
- Dempsey plated two runs, including the eventual game-winner in the eighth by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
- Donovan Casey earned his third win of the season by tossing the final 1.1 innings and was 1-for-4 at the dish.
- Boston College trails the all-time series, 8-15, including a 5-12 mark at home. The first match-up was a 3-0 Maine win in Chestnut Hill in 1975.
- The Eagles snapped a six-game losing streak to the Black Bears with a 12-0 win in 2015.
- The 2018 Eagles are third on the program's single-season stolen base list. BC has logged 84 on the season, tied for 19th in the country and ranked second in the ACC. The top spot in the BC record book is owned by the 2005 and 2006 teams, which recorded 113 steals each.
- Freshman OF Chris Galland stole two bases on the weekend at Notre Dame to move into first place on the Eagles' single-season records list. In his first-year campaign, he has swiped 28 bags and counting. He is second in the ACC, two back of Louisville's Josh Stowers, and is tied for 13th in the nation. He was caught stealing for the first time on April 17 against Rhode Island to break up his perfect streak. He is also the first BC player to go a perfect 20-for-20. Galland is eighth in the ACC with a .329 batting average and has reached base safely in the last 21 games, the longest streak this season by an Eagle.
- Senior INF Jake Palomaki has reached base in 42 of the Eagles' 46 games this season with a hit in 32 of them. His nine-game hit streak (March 2-16) was the longest of the season for BC. He has a .316 batting average, 16th in the ACC. His 149 career walks are first in BC record books, as he topped the list in three years.Â
- Sophomore OF Dante Baldelli is 17-for-19 on the stolen-base paths, tying for 10th on BC's single-season record list. He is tied for ninth in the ACC with Palomaki.
- Senior RHP Brian Rapp's .193 opponent batting clip this season is currently the lowest in BC record books. He pitched seven innings of one-run ball and earned a no-decision in an eventual 2-1 win over Louisville (5/6).
- Sophomore OF Joe Suozzi walked onto the BC baseball team. He made his first career start on April 7 against Pittsburgh and recorded his first career hit and RBI. He tallied a career-high three hits at Notre Dame (4/29).
- Sophomore INF Brian Dempsey logged three walks and recorded two sacrifice hits at Notre Dame (4/29). With 12 sacrifice hits on the season, he is tied second in BC single-season record books and his 19 career sacs are tied for seventh all-time. He has reached base in 40 of the Eagles' 46 games this season. He tied a career-long, six-game hit streak from March 29 to April 7 that included eight hits and two RBIs.
- Junior RHP Thomas Lane has inherited 28 runners in his team-leading 27 appearances out of the bullpen. Just four have scored and all between April 13-22. He is second on the bullpen staff with 26 Ks and has the lowest opponent batting average at .160.Â
- Junior LHP Dan Metzdorf tied a career-high with eight innings pitched in his shutout start at Notre Dame (4/28), allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out three, collecting his first win of the season. He retired the first seven batters he faced and 17 of 18 through the seven innings. He did not allow a walk until the seventh and threw 24 straight first-pitch strikes and 25 of 26 to batters on the day. In four starts from March 24 to April 13 - 27.2 innings - Metzdorf struck out 39 batters. In the series-clinching win against Virginia Tech on March 24, he struck out a career-high 13 over eight innings. It was the first time in 11 years a BC pitcher recorded 13 Ks.Â
- Metzdorf and Lane combined for the first BC two-hitter since March 25, 2017 in a 1-0 loss to No. 6 Clemson when Metzdorf, junior RHP John Witkowski, senior LHP Carmen Giampetruzzi and 2017 20th-round draft pick RHP Donovan Casey completed the feat.
- Junior RHP Jacob Stevens now owns the top spot in BC record books with 42 career starts. He recorded his 200th career strikeout on Friday at Notre Dame. His 204 overall ranks seventh all-time at BC.
