Eagles finish in top four in all events
WEST WINSOR, N.J. – The Boston College rowing team competed at the Knecht Cup on Saturday on Mercer Lake in West Winsor, N.J. The Eagles raced in five events that were condensed into one day due to poor weather forecasts for Sunday.
Â
"The team showed a lot of progress against teams we had seen earlier in the season," head coach Steve Fiske said. "Every boat was competitive against a large field of competitors. We came out on the winning side of a couple of close races, which is a testament to the teams' hard work."
Â
In the varsity eight race, BC faced tough competition against 18 other teams. The Eagles raced ACC rival Miami for the first time this season in the morning heats, finishing ahead of the Hurricanes by less than a second to earn a spot in the grand final. In the final, they earned silver medals with a time of 6:45.56 in a close race, placing second to Penn. BC came in just ahead of Boston University Lightweights and Wisconsin Lightweights, who finished in third and fourth, respectively.Â
Â
In a photo finish, Boston College won the grand final of the second varsity eight event. The BC crew was close to Penn the whole race and edged ahead of the Quakers by .04 seconds for the win. ACC rival Miami finished in third followed by Temple, George Washington, Connecticut and Kansas.
Â
The varsity four earned silver medals in the grand final after advancing through both heats and semifinals. Penn won the race finishing 1.67 seconds ahead of the Eagles. Temple and ACC rival Miami finished in third and fourth, followed by Massachusetts and Harvard-Radcliffe Lightweights.
Â
The second varsity four finished in fourth place with a time of 7:53.49 behind Temple, Kansas and Penn.
Â
The third varsity eight earned silver medals in a close race with Connecticut, who won the race by .63 seconds. Wisconsin Lightweights were third followed by Kansas, Old Dominion and Villanova.
