Eagles Drop First Two Games of the Aggie Classic

BC lost two close games in Texas to open the 2018 season
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Boston College softball team dropped its first two games of the 2018 season on Friday, Feb. 9 in the Aggie Classic to Texas Tech and No. 6/9 Texas A&M.

The Eagles took Texas Tech to nine innings in their first game of the day, but fell, 4-2, behind a strong six-inning performance by senior pitcher Jessica Dreswick. Senior pitcher Ally Frei only allowed three runs in the second game of the day but the Eagles fell, 3-1, to the Aggies.

Senior Chloe Sharabba notched a team-leading three hits on the day. Classmate Jordan Chimento picked up a hit and an RBI. On the mound, Dreswick pitched six innings of the first game, allowing only three hits and three walks. The right-hander picked up eight strikeouts on the day. Â

Kelcy Leach hit a two-run homerun to left field in the top of the ninth inning to give Texas Tech a 4-2 lead. The Eagles were unable to score in the bottom of the inning, securing the victory for the Red Raiders.

How it Happened:
- Despite putting two runners on base in the first and third innings, Dreswick held the score at 0-0 through four innings. The right-hander struck out five of the first nine batters she faced.
- Senior Chloe Sharabba collected the first hit of the 2018 season when she drove a double into center field in the bottom of the fourth inning to put a runner in scoring position for the Eagles. Classmate Annie Murphy hit a single to left field to give BC runners on the corners with nobody out. A sacrifice bunt by senior Jordan Chimento allowed Sharabba to score and advanced Murphy to second. Freshman Emme Martinez flied out to center field to drive in Murphy and make it 2-0 heading into the fifth.
- The Eagles got out of a bases-loaded jam when Dreswick forced two fly balls to center field to collect the final two outs of the top of the fifth inning, keeping the score at 2-0. 15-pitch at-bat
- Senior Ally Frei came in to pitch the seventh inning. After a hit by pitch and a walk, the Red Raiders had two runners on base with nobody out. Michaela Cochran drove a double into left field to tie the score at 2-2. The Eagles were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings.
- Marissa Mirabal was placed on second in the top of the ninth inning due to the international tie-breaker rule. Kelcy Leach homered to left field to give the Red Raiders a 4-2 lead.
- Despite getting runners on first and third in the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles were unable to score.

How it Happened:
- After a walk and a fielding error, Texas A&M took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Cami Sellers turned a double play to end the inning and prevent the Aggies from scoring again.
- Junior Carly Severini drew a walk in the top of the second inning. Classmate Allyson Moore then reached second base on a fielding error, driving in Severini to tie the score at 1-1.
- A double and a walk by the Aggies put two runners on base in the bottom of the third inning. Sellers made a heads-up play to get the force-out at third and prevent a runner from scoring and keeping the score tied.
- Kelbi Fortenberry singled to shortstop to start off the bottom of the fifth inning. Forternberry stold second and Kaitlyn Alderink doubled to left center to drive in Fortenberry to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead. Tori Valdes then singled up the middle to drive in Alderink and increase the Texas A&M lead to 3-1.
- Sharabba led off with a double in the top of the sixth inning and Murphy picked up a single, but the Eagles were unable to score again in the game.
