Eagles Power Past Siena, Fall in 14 to FIU

Freshman CC Cook notched her first collegiate home run in game one
MIAMI, Fla. – The Boston College softball team shut out Siena, 8-0, behind a combined three-hit performance by senior pitcher Jessica Dreswick and freshman CC Cook in the first game of the day, but fell to FIU, 1-0, in 14 innings despite a complete game, 405-total pitch performance by redshirt junior Allyson Frei.

BC claimed a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning of game one behind four singles and three stolen bases. Cook broke the game open with a three-run home run in the fifth to make it 7-0 BC. A double by junior Carly Severini in the sixth drove in senior Jordan Chimento, increasing the Eagles' lead to 8-0. Dreswick kept Siena off-balance throughout as she pitched five innings, allowing only three hits and recording six strikeouts.

The Eagles battled FIU in the second close game between the two teams over the weekend. Despite threatening in the third, seventh and 10 innings, BC remained scoreless. Redshirt junior pitcher Allyson Frei threw 13.2 innings, allowing 13 hits and recording seven strikeouts. The co-captain topped her 182 pitches thrown in yesterday's game versus FIU as she threw a season-high 223 pitches on the day. Frei has now thrown 405 total pitches over the past two days for the Eagles.

BC returns to action when it participates in the third and final day of the FIU Classic tomorrow, Feb. 24. The Eagles will play CCSU at 10 a.m.

BC Highlights:
- With a single in the first inning, senior Chloe Sharabba has now reached base safely in 19 straight games dating back to the 2017 season. The senior has collected a hit in 11-of-the-12 games so far this season. Sharabba also now has a team-leading six stolen bases on the season.
- Cook notched her first collegiate home run in the sixth inning of game one to pick up three RBIs. The rookie also saw her first action from the mound, throwing one scoreless inning, recording one strikeout.
- Freshman Gianna Randazza picked up her first collegiate hit – a single to right center field – in the fourth inning.
- All eight of the Eagles runs in the first game were scored with two outs.
- This first game against Siena marks the second shutout of the season for BC and the first time that it run-ruled an opponent. The first time the Eagles held the opponent scoreless was against Nebraska on Feb. 18.
- Four different Eagles had a multi-hit game against Siena, including junior Allyson Moore, Sharabba, junior Lexi DiEmmanuele and Cook.
- Frei continued to be the work-horse for of the weekend for BC as she threw 405 total pitches over the past two days. Frei now has 27 career complete games, which is 11th in the BC record books

How it Happened:
- With two outs in the fourth inning, DiEmmanuele singled through the right side and then stole second base. Cook hit a single to the pitcher, driving home DiEmmanuele. Randazza drove a single to right center field and then stole second base to put runners on second and third. Chimento hit a single to third base to advance Randazza and score Cook. Chimento then stole the Eagles' third bag of the inning, forcing a throwing error that allowed the senior and Randazza to score, making it 4-0 BC.
- The Eagles added to their lead in the following inning when freshman Emme Martinez reached base on a fielding error. DiEmmanuele hit a single to right center field to put runners on first and second with two outs. Cook blasted a home run to left field to pick up three RBIs and put BC up 7-0.
- Chimento drew a walk in the sixth inning and scored when Severini hit a double to center field, securing an 8-0 victory for the Eagles. Â

How it Happened:
- The Eagles threatened in the third inning when Randazza led off with a single to shortstop and senior Annie Murphy reached base on a fielding error, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. Both runners were stranded though, keeping game scoreless.
- Despite three singles by FIU in the fifth inning, the Panthers were unable to score as freshman Emme Martinez threw a runner out at second, Frei recorded a strikeout and forced a fielder's choice to get out of the jam.
- In the seventh inning, Chimento hit a single to center field and Randazza drew a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs. BC was unable to score though and the Panthers, despite having two runners on base due to a walk and a single in the bottom of the inning, were also unable to score at the end of seven.
- Murphy walked and advanced to second on a ground out to put the winning run on second with two outs in the tenth inning for the Eagles, but they were unable to score.
- Erin Eiland opened the 12 inning with a single up the middle and she advanced to second on a ground out. Tatyana Forbes then drew a walk to put runners first and second with one out. Frei forced Michaela Mills to ground into a double play though to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
- The Panthers loaded the bases in the 14th inning with nobody out. Frei forced a strike out followed by a ground out to record two outs in the inning, but a hit by pitch forced home the runner at third, giving FIU a 1-0 walk-off win.
