Frei Throws Complete Game in 11 Inning Loss to FIU

BC lost its first two games of the FIU Classic
MIAMI, Fla. – The Boston College softball team fell, 9-5, in its first game of the day against Michigan State despite a three-hit, three RBI performance by freshman Emme Martinez and dropped the second game of the day in 11 innings, 2-1, despite 10.2 strong innings from redshirt junior pitcher Allyson Frei.

BC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game behind doubles from senior Annie Murphy and Martinez. A bases-clearing double by Michigan State in the second inning helped the Spartans take a 4-2 lead. Michigan State added one more run in the fourth inning, but the Eagles responded with a three-running fifth inning to tie the score. The Spartans took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth and then increased their lead to 9-5 in the sixth inning off of three singles to take control of the game.

In the second game of the day against FIU, Frei threw 182 total pitches over 10.2 innings. The co-captain kept the Eagles in the game through 11 innings, allowing only two runs and four walks. The 182 pitches thrown by Frei are the most pitches thrown by a BC player so far this season.

BC Highlights:
The Eagles tied the score at five a piece in the fifth inning off of four singles. Senior pitcher Jessica Dreswick held the Spartans to just one run in the bottom of the inning to keep the game close but Michigan State would collect three singles in the following inning to take a 9-5 lead that it would hold to close out the game.

BC returns to action when it participates in the second day of the FIU Classic in Miami, Fla. on Feb. 24. The Eagles will play Siena College at 11:15 a.m. and FIU at 3:45 p.m.

BC Highlights:
- Martinez went three-for-four in the first game of the day. She led the team in hits, including two doubles. The rookie also picked up a team-leading three RBIs in the game. She also collected an RBI in the second game to finish with four RBIs on the day.
- Senior Chloe Sharabba has now reached base safely in all 11 games so far this season. The co-captain notched two hits on the day and scored a team-leading three runs.
- Murphy continued to hit in the leadoff spot and collected her second double of the season. She is now in fourth place in the BC record books with 32 career doubles.
- Freshman Cami Sellers continues to lead the freshmen class with seven hits. Â Â
- In the second game of the day, Frei threw 10.2 innings, allowing nine hits and only two runs. The right-hander struck out a season-high 11 batters on the day and allowed only four walks. Frei now has 26 career complete games, which is 11th in the BC record books. She has recorded 418 strikeouts in her career for fifth place in the record books.
- The second game of the day vs. FIU marked the second extra inning game for the Eagles this season. BC went into nine innings against Texas Tech on Feb. 9 in its first game of the year, but lost, 4-2.Â
- The 2-1 loss to FIU is the second one-run loss by BC this season. The Eagles lost 2-1 to Nebraska on Feb. 16.Â

How it Happened:
- Murphy got the Eagles started right away with a double to left field in the first inning. Sharabba drew a walk to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Martinez blasted a double to left field to drive in Murphy and Sharabba and put BC up 2-0.
- In the second inning, Caitie Ladd hit a single to shortstop to reach base with one out. McKenzie Long followed with another single to shortstop. Lindsey Besson hit a single to second base to load the bases. Melanie Baccay reached on a fielder's choice to score Ladd. Ebonee Echols hit a bases-clearing double to center field to score three more runs for the Spartans, making it 4-2.
- The Spartans added a run in the fourth inning when Besson drove a single to third base. Baccay reached base on a throwing error, moving Summer Callahan, the pinch runner for Besson, all the way home to increase the Spartans' lead to 5-2.
- Senior Jordan Chimento led off the fifth inning with a single to right field and she advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sharabba hit a single to shortstop to advance Chimento to third and put runners on the corners with one out. Junior Carly Severini reached base on a throwing error to move all of the runners over. Chimento scored while Sharabba and Severini took third and second, respectively. Back-to-back singles by Sellers and Martinez drove home two runs to tie the score at 5-5.
- The Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the inning when Echols led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a ground out. Kelcey Carrasco reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing Echols to third. Ladd reached base on a fielding error, allowing Echols to score and giving Michigan State a 6-5 lead.
- The Spartans took a commanding lead in the sixth inning. A hit by pitch and a single put runners on first and second with two outs. One more single loaded the bases and drove in a run. Another single by the Spartans drove in two more runs to make the final score, 9-5.
- The game remained scoreless until the ninth inning. Both the Eagles and the Panthers picked up a run in the ninth to tie the score at one a piece. FIU collected two singles in the 11th inning to pick up the walk-off 2-1 win.
- The game remained scoreless through seven innings, forcing extra innings.
- The first run of the game did not happen until the ninth inning. Sharabba led off the inning with a single to third base and then stole second base. The senior advanced to third on a passed ball. Martinez reached on a fielder's choice to pick up an RBI and score Sharabba, making the score 1-0.
- The Panthers responded in the bottom of the inning when Jessica Rivera singled down the left field line and Kayla Whitehead walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Michaela Mills hit a single to right field to drive home Rivera and tie the score at 1-1.
- Rivera of FIU picked up a single to third base in the 11th and she advanced to second on a ground out. Mills singled up the middle to drive home Rivera in walk-off fashion and secure the 2-1 victory.
BC returns to action when it participates in the second day of the FIU Classic in Miami, Fla. on Feb. 24. The Eagles will play Siena College at 11:15 a.m. and FIU at 3:45 p.m.
