
Sweeney Selected as a Mackey Award Semifinalist

Graduate tight end up for top honor at position.
NEW YORK – Boston College graduate tight end Tommy Sweeney was named a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award by the Mackey Foundation on Thursday. Eight semifinalists were identified for the award, which recognizes the top tight end in college football.

The 2018 John Mackey recipient will be announced on Dec. 5, 2018 and be presented with the award a day later at the College Football Awards show on ESPNU. The list of semifinalists will be trimmed to a group of finalists on No. 22.

Sweeney leads the Eagles with 26 receptions and is third on the team with 237 receiving yards. He has scored three touchdowns; one of four players with three or more on BC this season. Sweeney is one of six tight ends used in Boston College's 12-personnel. He has been on the field for 585 offensive snaps; accounting for 78% of the Eagles' plays this season.

Last season, Sweeney earned All-ACC Third Team with 36 catches for 512 yards and four touchdowns. In his career, Sweeney sixth all-time at BC in receptions by a tight end with 93 catches. He has totaled 1,170 yards and 10 touchdowns in his BC career.

Boston College is in action this week at Florida State for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Nov. 17. The game will be televised by ESPN2 and aired across the BC IMG Sports Network, including 93.7 WEEI.
