PHILADELPHIA – Boston College senior defensive end Zach Allen was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award by the Maxwell Football Club on Monday. Twenty semifinalists were identified for the 24th Bednarik Award, named in honor of Chuck Bednarik for the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.
Â
Allen is in the top-10 in tackles for loss and sacks in the ACC with 12.5 TFLs and 5.5 sacks. He has totaled 48 tackles after being one of just two defensive linemen in the country with 100 or more in 2017.
Â
Entering the season, Allen was named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Wuerffel Tropy and Ted Hendricks Award. He also hauled in preseason All-America recognition by Phil Steele's and Athlon Sports. Earlier this month, Allen was named a quarterfinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which honors the top defensive player in college football who makes the biggest impact for his team both on and off the field.
Â
This season, Allen posted a 4.0-TFL game with two sacks on eight tackles with a forced fumble, two pass breakups and a quarterback hurry against Temple (9/29). He was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week after totaling seven tackles, including three TFLs and a sack for 10 yards with a blocked extra-point against Louisville (10/13).
Â
Boston College is in action this week at Virginia Tech for a 3:45 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Nov. 3. The game will be televised by Raycom Sports (My-38 locally) and aired across the BC IMG Sports Network, including 93.7 WEEI.
