Six Goal-Scorers Lead Eagles to Win Over UMass
October 14, 2018 | Field Hockey
The field hockey team ended their weekend on a positive note, defeating UMass at home
NEWTON, Mass. – The No. 12 Boston College field hockey team found a happy ending to their home weekend as they topped intrastate non-conference rival Massachusetts, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. While the Minutewomen kept a consistently strong offensive effort, Boston College's defense held together helping freshman goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy only allow one goal. The Eagles are now 9-5 overall while the Minutewomen bumped to 7-9.Â
Senior captain Lucy Lytle started the contest off with a bang as she knocked the ball past goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne just 25 seconds into the game. This is the second consecutive game where Lytle has scored the opening point.Â
Freshman goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy made a name for herself throughout the opening stanza. The rookie saw her first career penalty stroke and kept the ball out of the net, keeping the Eagles' 1-0 lead.
The Eagles increased their lead with a goal from senior captain Frederique Haverhals as she shot straight through a flurry of defenders and into the cage off of a corner shot.Â
BC out-shot UMass 11-8 over the first half while each goalkeeper recorded five saves.
Sophomore Elizabeth Warner added a bit more insurance for the home team, opening the second half with a goal just three minutes in. Â
After a disputed call, the Minutewomen put themselves on the board after a successful second penalty stroke shot.Â
The Eagles quickly answered as freshman Sky Caron recorded her second goal of the season with a reverse tip-in. To finalize the scoring for the afternoon, senior Elizabeth Dennehy capitalized on a corner with less than one minute remaining on the clock.
Defensively, junior Kate Pianko held the weight in the back field, redirecting almost every ball she saw back into the Eagles' offensive zone. The Eagles held the shot advantage 23-9, only allowing one shot attempt over the second half.
