Dillon sets BC freshman rushing record, goes over 1,000 yards
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Freshman running back AJ Dillon became BC's all-time freshman rushing leader, finishing the game with 36 carries for 196 yards and one touchdown as Boston College (5-5, 3-4) fell, 17-14, to No. 23 NC State (7-3, 5-1) on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

Dillon became the first BC player to rush for over 1,000 yards since graduate quarterback Tyler Murphy tallied 1,320 in 2014. With 196 yards on the day, Dillon recorded his fourth career 100-yard game.

BC entered the fourth quarter with a 14-10 lead but a 50-yard touchdown run by Wolfpack running back Nyheim Hines midway through the quarter gave NC State a 17-14 lead that it would hold for the rest of the game. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Eagles as they drop to 9-6 all-time against the Wolfpack.

- Dillon became BC's all-time freshman rushing leader when he rushed for a 66-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. He passed Montel Harris, who racked up 920 yards in 13 games in the 2008 season. Dillon now has over 1,000 yards on the season. He recorded his fourth career 100-yard game, finishing with 36 carries for 196 yards and one touchdown.
- Graduate quarterback Darius Wade went 8-for-15 with 82 passing yards.
- Senior wide receiver Thadd Smith recorded his third touchdown of the season on a 12-yard rushing score.
- Junior defensive end Zach Allen led the team with nine tackles. He also had two pass breakups on the day.
- Redshirt freshman linebacker John Lamot recorded seven tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack.
- Sophomore defensive back Hamp Cheevers had two pass breakups.
KEY MOMENTS
- Hines had a 50-yard touchdown rush with 8:22 to go in the third quarter to give NC State a 17-14 lead that it would hold for the remainder of the game.
- With less than five minutes left to play in the game, BC had a chance to tie it when junior kicker Colton Lichtenberg was set to attempt a field goal. Junior holder Jeff Smith tried to roll out and throw the ball, but his pass to junior fullback Colton Cardinal was incomplete. NC State took over on downs on the 22-yard line with a three-point lead.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Strong pass coverage by junior defensive back Taj Amir-Torres on third down forced NC State to kick a 54-yard field goal with 5:07 remaining in the first quarter, but Kyle Bambard could not convert, keeping the game scoreless.
- The Eagles got on the board with 6:10 to play in the second quarter when, following an 11-yard rush by Thadd Smith, Dillon rushed for a 66-yard touchdown to give BC a 7-0 lead.
- Jaylen Samuels scored on an eight-yard rushing touchdown run at 2:26 to complete an 11-play, 87-yard scoring drive for State, tying the game.
- Senior Mike Knoll's punt was blocked at the BC 15-yard line. After a delay of game penalty, NC State had the ball at the BC 24-yard line. Kyle Bambard then converted a 41-yard field goal to give the Wolfpack a 10-7 lead heading into the half.
- Junior linebacker Kevin Bletzer recovered a fumble at the NC State 37-yard line and returned the ball 14 yards to put the Eagles at the Pack 23-yard line. After a series of rushes by Dillon and Wade, Thadd Smith rushed for a 12-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Eagles a 14-10 lead.
- The Wolfpack reclaimed the lead when Hines rushed for a 50-yard touchdown at 8:22 to complete a five-play, 83-yard scoring drive.
