Postgame Quotes: NC State
November 11, 2017 | Football
Head Coach Dave Doeren
Q. What a difference a game makes?
DAVE DOEREN: Yeah, I mean, you recruit guys like that for a reason, and when you get a difference-maker with a heart of a champion, like Nyheim's, it matters. Like I said, after the Notre Dame game, it's a different football team, and you don't have him. But not only did we have him, but we have him back healthy, and I'm excited about that with two in-state games.
Q. Did you know during the week he was moving around better? Seemed like in warm-ups he looked better?
DAVE DOEREN: Yeah, Sunday when I saw him I said, how are you compared to last Sunday, and it's not even close. We didn't practice him Tuesday. Gave him one extra day, then he went full speed Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and felt good about it.
Q. What can you do heading into the Wake Forest game next week? What are some things you have to shore up? Obviously field goals and turnovers, but is there anything specifically that you're looking ahead to?
DAVE DOEREN: Can I enjoy today?
Q. Oh, 24 hours, of course.
DAVE DOEREN: We'll talk about Wake Forest next week.
Q. You're up 10-7, and what were you trying to do with the lateral back to Ryan?
DAVE DOEREN: We had a double pass on, and unfortunately it was very poorly executed by us, and it was a throwback and just bad timing. Called trick play and sometimes bad things happen. That was really unfortunate to turn the ball over and put our defense in that kind of a situation.
Q. Bradley actually became your --
DAVE DOEREN: All-time leading sack leader. We just gave him the game ball. That's pretty special when you talk about the D-linemen that N.C. State's had and Mario Williams, the first overall pick. For him to now be better statistically, to be called the All-Time greatest defensive lineman at N.C. State is a big thing. That's why he came back.
That Chubb patch now that he has No. 9 might change down the road somewhere. We might be wearing his number. It's pretty neat.
Q. Do you feel there is a weight off your shoulders now coming off back-to-back losses to really talented teams that you have a win now under your belt again?
DAVE DOEREN: It's always good to get a winning taste back. Our goal at the end of last week was to try to get to seven wins in the ACC, which has never been done. It's a great goal, it's a lofty goal. We knew we had to beat a very good football team here today that was playing for bowl eligibility on Senior Day with a week off. So that was a tough football game right there. Fortunate to come home with a win.
Q. I don't know the break-down of the rushing stats, first half, second half, seems like maybe you made an adjustment. Dexter Wright, maybe, did you tweak something that helped slow down Dylan?
DAVE DOEREN: Tackled him. Yeah, I mean, that first drive we were like a sieve. We were just bouncing off the kid, you know. Setting edges, they did have some new formations that we didn't show them, and we knew that would happen coming out of a bye. So the guys lined up, we challenged them at halftime if they don't score, they don't win. Unfortunately, we gave them field position and we were able to bounce back there.
Defensively we really finished well in the fourth quarter. Proud of the guys blocking that punt before the half too. Getting that field goal.
Senior Defensive End Bradley Chubb
Â
Q. Was it worth celebrating?
BRADLEY CHUBB: It definitely was. A great team win. It wasn't pretty at first, but we pulled it out, so we're all happy about that.
Q. After that kind of screwy turnover where they scored and you guys got behind, what was the thought process there?
BRADLEY CHUBB: Just finish the game off strong. We knew coming in that we were going to be the better team, and we just had to prove it to ourselves and to them. We just came out on defense. We realized we're going to have to win the game for the team. So that's the role we took.
Q. You passed Mario Williams, I think both career mark sacks and tackles for loss. It seemed like an inevitability at some point this season, but to actually do it, your thoughts?
BRADLEY CHUBB: It feels amazing. It hasn't hit me yet, but I feel like when I get home and lay in my bed to just sit down, it's going to all come at once. But it's definitely something I was pushing for this year, and I'm glad I finally did it.
Q. First of all, congratulations on that. That's a great honor. So, goals are still, I would imagine, ten wins, seven wins ACC. Any thoughts going into the last couple games of Wake, Carolina, in-state rivalries?
BRADLEY CHUBB: We know they're going to be great games. We can't let this win cloud our minds, and I can't let our accomplishments cloud my mind. We have to push into the next week and come out ready to work on Tuesday.
Q. What is the difference with you guys when you have Nyheim and when you don't?
BRADLEY CHUBB: Nyheim's a dynamic playmaker on special teams and running the ball. So I mean, he's just one of the best players that I've seen with the ball in his hands. Him and Jay Sam. When those two are clicking, it's a beautiful thing to see.
Q. Did you see him sprinting down the sideline?
BRADLEY CHUBB: Yeah, I saw him on the big screen. I was trying to stay warm, but I had looked up last minute and saw him score, so, yeah.
Q. You're not smiling right now.
BRADLEY CHUBB: Oh, yeah, definitely. Not at all. Big-time playmaker.
Q. What did you think worked for you guys? I think in the second half you were a little more effective than Dillon in stopping the run. What did you think worked out?
BRADLEY CHUBB: Our main thing this week -- because in the three games we lost, we got outscored 42-0, and we knew that was unacceptable. So coming out at halftime, I knew the team just rallied together and knew the third quarter wasn't our strongest quarter the past couple games, so we just came out and tried to play as fast as we possibly can.
All credit to the Boston College running back. He was an outstanding player we just schemed it, and everybody executed what they needed to do.
Q. Steal any towels?
BRADLEY CHUBB: No, not today. Nobody had them on, so I couldn't go for one.
Q. Two different quarterbacks, too.
BRADLEY CHUBB: Yeah, neither one of them had one on.
Q. They must have known?
BRADLEY CHUBB: Yeah, turf field is a little different.
Junior Running Back Nyheim Hines
Â
Q. When did you figure out that your ankle was better and you were moving around and feeling more like yourself?
NYHEIM HINES: I found out we have one of the best training staffs in the country. Justin, he puts up with my complaining all week because my ankle hurts. They do a great job of getting me ready for Saturdays, and I think that's the biggest thing. Between them and the O-line, the training staff and the O-line, they do a great job of helping me play well on Saturday.
Q. What turned out to be the game winner?
NYHEIM HINES: I had patience. I trusted in the line. I had trusted Tony was going to reach the three technique and he did. Really I just stayed on my track and made a play after that. I had great blocking down field, so it wasn't really a big play for me. Just everybody trying to finish, and it turned out to be the game-winning touchdown.
Q. How does it feel that you had this win under your belt after back-to-back losses to top five teams? Must feel good to get one under your belt?
NYHEIM HINES: Feels great. We knew this was going to be a challenge as well. Boston always historically has a great defense. They didn't disappoint. They had a great defense. They stopped us on a lot of third downs. They made it a dog fight, and it came down to executing and straining for that one play. It was just one play that helped us win the game.
Q. Any thoughts ahead to a couple in-state games rivals, Wake and Carolina?
NYHEIM HINES: Coach Doeren told us when he brought us together that we're basically playing for a championship. We're trying to establish a brand of North Carolina State all over the state of Carolina.
Q. What would you estimate you were at for Clemson, what percent?
NYHEIM HINES: Maybe 75, 70%. I don't know. I think I played about 28 or 26 snaps. But I was out there just straining to finish. The line and all the players got me, and I was just trying to fight. Each week I'm going to fight to do as many plays as I did, and I think I did more plays than last week and that's a goal.
Q. You understand the N.C. State history. After the crazy lateral from Jay Samuels, that kind of gifted them a touchdown, were you thinking what is this BC vex over us?
NYHEIM HINES: Yeah, our track record is sometimes such that we like to not finish. I think that's been the biggest difference between this year and last year. We lost a lot of games in the fourth quarter. Sometimes we were up touchdowns, sometimes it's a close game or tie game, but we somehow find a way to win rather than find a way to lose, which we did last year.
