The Mustangs struck first on the game's opening drive with an eight play, 75 yard drive capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by running back Kendrick Raphael, taking a 6-0 lead after a failed extra point.
The Eagles responded with their own 52-yard field goal from Luca Lombardo in the first quarter, tying his career-long after hitting a 52-yarder last season vs. California.
After forcing a three-and-out on SMU's second drive of the game, Mason McKenzie found Evan Dickens for a 43-yard touchdown to put the Eagles ahead 10-6, capping a seven-play, 65-yard drive.
The Mustangs regained the lead a quarter of the way through the second frame after quarterback Kevin Jennings found the end zone on a four-yard rushing touchdown, giving SMU a 13-10 lead.
After an Eagles turnover to begin the third quarter, the Mustangs took a 19-10 lead with a 14-yard touchdown reception from tight end Randy Pittman Jr.
The hosts extended their lead to 15 in the final frame after Jennings found Derrick McFall on a 20-yard touchdown pass.
McKenzie orchestrated a nine-play, 75-yard drive following a six-yard touchdown pass to Edgehille to slice the gap to 25-16. However, the Mustangs recovered the onside kick attempt, running out the clock to seal the win.
