The No. 3 Eagles play the first of three straight road games to open HEA play
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 3 Boston College women's hockey team opens Hockey East play this weekend with a pair of road games, which also serve as the squad's first away games of the season.
On Friday evening, the Eagles will travel to Connecticut for a 6 p.m. faceoff at Freitas Ice Forum, in Storrs, Conn., before traveling to Vermont for a Sunday showdown in Burlington.
BC (3-0-0) is coming off a 4-2 victory over Quinnipiac on Tuesday night. Paced by the team's second line, the Eagles got a combined nine points from the trio of freshman Daryl Watts (1G, 3A), sophomore Caitrin Lonergan (1G, 2A) and freshman Willow Corson (1G, 1A) in the win.
Despite playing only three games this season, Watts enters the weekend ranked third nationally in points (9) and tops all players nationally in points per game (3.00). Lonergan is second nationally in points per game (2.67), while Watts, Lonergan and senior defenseman Toni Ann Miano are all tied atop the national assists per game chart (1.67 each).
Connecticut (3-2-0) comes into Friday's game fresh off a two-game sweep of Union in Storrs, where the Huskies out-scored the Dutchwomen 11-1 in the series. UConn opened the season with a split at St. Cloud State before falling at UVM, 2-1.
Sophomore Briana Colangelo (4 goals, 3 assists) and freshman Natalie Snodgrass (3 goals, 4 assists) sit atop the Huskies' scoring leaders. A total of seven players have combined to score 15 goals this season, including five with multiple tallies. Snodgrass was teammates with Lonergan (2015) and Cayla Barnes (2015, 2016) on the U.S.' gold-medal winning squads at the IIHF Women's Under-18 World Championships.
UConn has played two goaltenders this season, with the Huskies splitting their two series between senior Annie Belanger (2-1-0, 1.00 GAA, .955 save percentage) and sophomore Morgan Fisher (1-1-0, 1.53 GAA, .939 save percentage). So far this season, Belanger has been the Friday starter, and also got the call against Vermont in the conference opener. Fisher has started the team's second games at St. Cloud and Union.
BC leads the all-time series against Connecticut, posting a 30-14-8 record – including a 28-12-7 mark in Hockey East play.
Last year, BC won the three-game series, 2-0-1. The Eagles won 3-0 at UConn on Oct. 28 behind Andie Anastos' three power-play goals, then took a 5-1 win the next day at Kelley Rink. On Feb. 3, the teams played to a 4-4 tie at Kelley Rink, but the Eagles twice battled back from three-goal deficits – including a 3-0 UConn lead after the first period – to force the draw. Lonergan's strike game at 1:42 of the third period pulled the Eagles even and, despite a BC 19-8 shot advantage in third period and OT, the teams played to the tie.
Following Friday's game, the Eagles stay on the road and will travel to face Vermont on Sunday, Oct. 22. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Catamounts' Gutterson Fieldhouse.
