Miano, Watts Strike in Tie at UConn
October 20, 2017 | Women's Hockey
Eagles convert twice on the power play in first Hockey East game
STORRS, Conn. – Freshman Daryl Watts scored the game-tying goal with less than a minute left in the second period and the Eagles out-shot the Huskies 47-30 in the game – including a 22-8 margin in the third period – but the No. 3 Boston College women's hockey team played to a 2-2 tie at Connecticut on Friday night.
The Huskies got on the board first at 12:30 of the first with a goal off a faceoff in the BC end, but Toni Ann Miano tied it up for Boston College (3-0-1, 0-0-1 HEA) with :47 left in the first when her power-play goal from the high slot beat UConn goaltender Annie Belanger.
Connecticut (3-2-1, 0-1-1 HEA) pulled ahead 4:13 into the second on the power play, as Leah Lum's shot off the post kicked back into the crease and in off Katie Burt. But with 56 seconds left in the second period, Watts' fifth goal of the year – and the Eagles' second power-play goal of the game – brought the Eagles back.
In overtime, BC hit two posts – Cayla Barnes less than 30 seconds into the extra session and Makenna Newkirk with 2:36 left – but BC couldn't crack Belanger, who made saves on all four shots she faced in overtime. Burt made 28 saves in the tie.
The Eagles return to the ice on Sunday, Oct. 22, when the team travels to Burlington, Vt., to face Vermont. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

- 1st, 12:30 | 0-1, UCONN GOAL – Theresa Knutson won a faceoff to the right of Katie Burt, and Justin Fredette threw it back to the point for Kayla Mee. Her wrister into traffic was deflected by Knutson by the edge of the faceoff circle to put the Huskies up early, 1-0
- 1st, 19:13 | 1-1, BC GOAL (PPG) – With the Eagles on the power play, Makenna Newkirk went behind the net and picked up the rebound of a Caitrin Lonergan shot, playing it back to Lonergan on the half boards. She then fed Miano, who dropped down into the high slot and her unimpeded shot kicked down off the cross bar and in behind Annie Belanger to pull BC even at 1-1.
- 2nd, 4:13 | 1-2, UCONN GOAL (PPG) – The Eagles forced a turnover at mid-ice, but couldn't control the puck and UConn was able to turn and bring an odd-man rush into the BC end. Natalie Snodgrass skated into the zone to the half boards and put a pass on Leah Lum's stick in the high slot. Lum skated in and put a backhand on target from the goal line, and it kicked off the post, back into the crease and ricocheted off Burt into the goal as the Huskies pulled ahead.
- 2nd, 19:04 | 2-2, BC GOAL (PPG) – With the Eagles putting heavy pressure on during a man advantage, the Eagles dug the puck out off the boards and Miano and Kenzie Kent passed back and forth at the points. When Miano got the pass back, she found Watts just off the faceoff circle. Watts turned and threw a wrist shot on target, beating Belanger over her blocker shoulder to tie the game up.
- OT, 00:28 | BC CHANCE – Cayla Barnes' shot from the near point found space through traffic, beating Belanger over her blocker shoulder, but skipped off the crossbar.
- OT, 3:24 | BC CHANCE – Kenzie Kent kept possession down low and Makenna Newkirk came up with the puck along the goal line. She skated in alone, and her hard-angle shot beat Belanger on her glove side, but she hit the post.
