Scouting the Hokies
- Virginia Tech enters the weekend series with four Atlantic Coast Conference wins, taking one game from Miami, North Carolina Duke and Pittsburgh.
- Last weekend, the Hokies split a doubleheader with Duke at English Field in Blacksburg, Va., before losing the rubber match, 3-1.
- In their midweek contest, VT beat Liberty, 11-10, on Tuesday.
- Outfielder Nick Anderson leads the Hokies with a .339 batting average while infielder Phil Sciretta has a team-high 56 hits – tied for eighth in the ACC – and 30 RBIs.
- Friday starter LHP Kit Scheetz earned a win over the Eagles last year, going 6.2 innings and allowing just one run. He struck out three, walked four and allowed seven hits. He picked up the win in his last start, pitching a complete game in the 3-2 win over Duke, allowing six hits and two runs with no walks and eight strikeouts.
- Saturday starter Packy Naughton shouldered the loss in the deciding game against the Blue Devils, allowing all three runs on eight hits and six walks over six innings. He struck out six. The last time out against the Eagles, he allowed five hits, one run, one walk and four Ks over 8.2 innings in a no decision.
- The Hokies boast six players on the roster from Massachusetts, including Sciretta (Duxbury) and Naughton (West Roxbury).
THE SERIES
- The Hokies lead the all-time series, 20-15. Since BC joined the ACC in 2006, the Eagles are 9-13.
- BC does have success at home, as the Eagles are 10-5 against the Hokies in the friendly confides of Pellagrini Diamond.
- The Hokies have taken eight of the last nine games, sweeping the series in Blacksburg last year and in 2012 and taking two-of-three in 2013 at The Heights. The two teams did not meet in 2014.
- In 2015, all three games were determined by three runs or less, including the series finale when VT won on a walk-off after BC held a 1-0 lead.
- BC has series sweeps in 2006 in Blacksburg and 2004 at home when both were members of the Big East.
- Head coach Mike Gambino, who was an assistant at VT from 2007 to 2010, has three wins against his former squad.
- Virginia Tech head coach Pat Mason was a member of the BC staff from 1998-02 under Pete Hughes. In 1999-00, Gambino was a member of the Eagles squad. He is a native of Franklin, Mass., and played at Northeastern (1994-97).
WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE EAGLES
- Boston College rebounded from a three-game sweep at Notre Dame by taking two-of-three against then No. 4 Louisville at home last weekend.
- The Eagles won the Friday night contest behind the arm of freshman RHP Jacob Stevens, who allowed just one unearned run in a career-high, seven-inning start. In 53 career innings, he has allowed just six earned runs, bringing his ERA to just 1.02, seventh-best in the NCAA and second in the ACC. His 5.43 hits per nine innings is 11th nationally.
- BC went on to come from behind to win in walk-off fashion on Saturday to clinch the series. Junior Nick Sciortino drove in the game-winning hit from third with one out in the ninth as the Eagles notched three straight hits off UL closer Zach Burdi.
- Since moving to the No. 2 spot in the batting order, Sciortino has 11 hits, seven runs and five RBIs and tied a career long with a seven-game hit streak.
- BC lost the last two games, falling in the third game to Louisville as RHP Kyle Funkhouser allowed just two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. The Eagles dropped a regional matchup to Bryant, 18-6, on Wednesday, sending six freshmen and two sophomores to the mound.
- Redshirt sophomore RHP Bobby Skogsbergh returned to action for the first time on Feb. 21 since March 24, 2015 as an injury sidelined him after only three appearances last season. In 25.2 innings of relief work this season, he has allowed just eight walks while striking out 16. In his 15 appearances, he has given up runs (nine) five times and earned runs (six) just four times. He earned his first win by throwing the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two against No. 4 Louisville on April 23.
- Sophomore Jake Palomaki has recorded at least one hit in the 23 of the 37 games this season, bringing his two-year total to at least one hit in 55 of the 87 games played at BC. He has also reached base in 70 career contests.
- Junior Johnny Adams is heating up midway through the season. In the last 22 games of 2015, he was 23-for-70 (.329) with 10 runs and 13 RBIs. In the last 11 games, Adams is 15-for-40 (.375) with six runs and eight RBIs.
