BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior Nick Sciortino extended his hit streak to a career-long eight games with a single in the third. He also threw out his 14th base runner stealing.Â
- Freshman left-hand reliever Zach Stromberg threw 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just one hit, one walk and striking out two. Â
- Freshmen RHPs Sean Hughes and Jack Nelson, along with Stromberg, combined for 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out four.
- Sophomore Jake Palomaki was hit by a pitch in the seventh. He has reached base in 32 of the Eagles' 38 games.
- KEY PLAYS
- Virginia Tech got on the board in the third with an unearned run before adding to the lead with a three-run home run in the fourth.
- VT lefties starter Kit Scheetz and reliever Jon Woodcock shut out the Eagles, holding them to just four hits and three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hokies took an early 1-0 lead in the third. After freshman starter Jacob Stevens got two quick outs, Saigo Jenco singled through the right side and stole second to move into scoring position. Tom Stoffel chopped one to second, which second baseman Palomaki misplayed, allowing Jenco to score.
- VT added to its lead in the fourth with a three-run shot by Joe Freiday, Jr. With one down, Stevens put two on with a hit by pitch and double to left. Freiday, Jr. hit one over the fence in right to put the Hokies up, 4-0.
- A run in the fifth chased Stevens from the game. Sciretta led off with a double and Nick Anderson moved him to third with a sac bunt. After Palomaki caught a flare behind the mound, Stevens walked his first batter to put two on and Garrett Hudson hit a bloop single to left to plate a run. Hughes replaced Stevens and got a strikeout swinging to end the inning.
- The Eagles loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs on two walks and a hit by pitch, forcing Scheetz from the game, but Woodcock got a grounder to short to keep BC off the board.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Stevens allowed five runs through 4.2 innings, the most he has given up this season. Four were earned, tying a career high, as he allowed four at Notre Dame on April 15 over seven innings.
- The home run to Freiday, Jr. was just the second homer off Stevens in 2016. The first was a solo shot at Clemson on March 20, his first career earned run allowed, after 29 innings.
- BC made three errors in the contest, bringing its season record to 6-8 when the Eagles make at least two errors in a game.
- It was the fourth time in 2016 that Eagles were held off the scoreboard.
- It was the sixth time in the all-time series the Hokies earned a victory in Chestnut Hill, improving to 10-6 against the Eagles and 21-15 in the overall series.
