BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Freshman RHP John Witkowski threw a career-high 2.2 innings of relief work and tied a career-high with three strikeouts. He retired seven of the eight batters he faced.
- Sophomore Scott Braren was 1-for-2 with an RBI, walk and hit by pitch to finish the series against Louisville 2-for-3.
- Junior Johnny Adams plated the other BC run on a 1-for-4 day. He has eight RBIs in the last four games.
- Junior Nick Sciortino was 1-for-3 with a walk and run. He was 4-for-10 with two runs, three walks and the game-winning RBI on Saturday.
- Sophomore Jake Palomaki drew a walk in the game. He has reached base in 30 of the Eagles' 25 games this season.
KEY PLAYS
- The Cardinals jumped out to an early, 4-0 lead in the fourth and answered each time the Eagles plated a run.
- UL starter RHP Kyle Funkhouser kept the BC bats at bay, allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. Reliever Shane Hummel picked up the save, throwing the final 2.1 scoreless innings and striking out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals struck first, scoring two in the second. Blake Tiberi and Wil Smith tallied back-to-back base hits and Danny Rosenbaum moved them up with a sac bunt. Devin Mann plated Tiberi with a sacrifice fly to center and Colin Lyman brought in Smith with a single to right. After issuing a walk, BC starting right-handed junior Mike King got out of the inning with his third K.
- Louisville added four in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Smith drew a walk to lead off the inning and scored on Rosenbaum's double to left. Rosenbaum moved to third on a wild pitch third strike and came home on sac fly by Corey Ray. King got a fly ball to end the inning.
- The Eagles got one back in the bottom of the inning. Sciortino led off with a walk and moved to second on a long fly out by junior Michael Strem. Adams came through with a base hit to right to plate Sciortino after Braren was hit by a pitch. With runners on first and third, Adams was picked off to end the inning.
- Devin Hairston knocked a one-out solo shot to left to give the Cardinals a 5-1 lead in the fifth before King was lifted for freshman LHP Zach Stromberg.
- BC added a run in the sixth when Strem tallied a one-out double off the wall in center. Braren plated him with two down on a base hit back up the middle.
- The Cardinals made it a 6-2 game in the seventh after Stromberg started the inning with a strikeout, but loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. Witkowski entered the game and got an infield popup on the first pitch. He gave up a single up the middle to Smith, allowing a run to come in, but the Louisville runner caught between second and third and the Eagles ended the inning on the tag out.
- BC loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but could not push any runs across. Right-hander Anthony Kidston walked two and the Cardinals went to the pen for Hummel. Sciortino got an infield single in the six hole to load the bases but Hummel got Strem swinging to leave all three on.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- King allowed five hits and five runs over a 4.1-inning start, walked three and struck out four. The five runs allowed were the second-most allowed on the season, after he gave up six over five innings at then-No. 22 Clemson on March 18.
- The victory was the first for Louisville in Chestnut Hill. BC is 2-4 all-time against the Cardinals as they joined the ACC before the 2015 season.
- BC did not commit an error for the 13th time. The Eagles are 8-5 in those games.
- The Eagles are to 6-7 against top-25 teams and 4-3 against top-10 teams.
