Freshman Ella Awobajo posted her first career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead 14th seeded Boston College past 11th seeded Virginia Tech, 70-58, in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum. Freshman Ella Awobajo posted her first career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead 14th seeded Boston College past 11th seeded Virginia Tech, 70-58, in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum. The Eagles will play sixth-seeded NC State tonight at 8 p.m. on NESNPlus (tape-delayed).
BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Ella Awobajo recorded a double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds), including 6-for-8 from the foul line. She also had two assists and two steals. Awobajo hit three foul shots and had three key boards in the final minute to help seal the win.
- Senior Nicole Boudreau finished with 10 points, five boards and picked up two defensive charges in the win.
- Junior Kelly Hughes pitched in with 12 points, five boards and a steal.
- BC's defense held Virginia Tech to 22 percent from the field for the game, including 18 percent in the final quarter.
- At the first media, V-Tech held a one-point lead, 7-6. Fasoula lead BC with six points in the quarter as the Eagles held a 12-11 first quarter lead. The Eagles had 12 rebounds to six for the Hokies but turned the ball over six times.
- The two teams battled through the second quarter as BC hit 5-for-9 from the floor while the Hokies shot 5-for-16 (31%). Ella Awobajo had eight points and eight boards to lead the Eagles into the break up three, 25-22.
- In the first five minutes of the third quarter, BC outscored Virginia Tech, 9-4, to take a 34-26 lead. The Eagles continued to battle and took a 39-30 lead after three on three foul shots from Nicole Boudreau, who was fouled on her three-point shot with 1.8 to play. The Eagles outscored Virginia Tech, 14-8, in the period. BC held Virginia Tech to just 2-for-14 from the floor in the third quarter.
- BC and Virginia Tech went scoreless in the first four minutes of the final quarter. Ella Awobajo broke the draught with a foul shot to give BC a 10 point lead. After Hannah Young hit a layup to cut the lead to eight points, the Eagles went on a pushed the lead to 12 points on a layup by Mariella Fasoula (9 points, 6 boards).
- Tech went on a cut the lead to seven points on a 5-0 run but a key block by Katie Quandt on Regan Magarity gave BC the ball. On the next play Awobajo was fouled and hit one of two freebies. After another missed three by Tech, Kelly Hughes was fouled and canned two foul shots for a 10 point lead. Awobajo would grab her 13th board with 37 seconds to play and calmly hit two more free throws to extend the lead.

- Kelly Hughes has hit 90 three's, which is six away from the program record set by Cal Bouchard in the 1999-00 season.
