Scouting the Teams
- Chicago State enters the weekend with a 1-2 record after taking the season opener at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and falling in the next two meetings last weekend. Infielder/Outfielder Andy Gertonson leads the team with a .571 batting average, tallying eight hits, four runs, four RBIs, a double and a home run opening weekend. Lefty Dillon Engle went five innings against A&M, allowing seven hits, four runs, walked three and struck out one in the loss. The Cougars will take on Villanova and Otterbein on Friday before playing the Eagles.
- Indiana State comes in 3-1, taking the first three games of 2016, including a 3-2, 12-inning victory over Oral Roberts, before falling to Arkansas-Little Rock in the final game of a four-game weekend set among the three schools. ISU is led by catcher Kaden Moore, who batted .467 in four games with seven hits and drove in seven runs. The Sycamores will face Iowa on Friday before battling the Eagles.
- Villanova comes to Port Charlotte looking for wins after dropping the first three games of the season at No. 12 Houston. Second baseman Todd Czinege leads the Wildcats at the plate after three contests with a .400 batting average, registering four hits, including a triple and a home run and two RBIs. Lefty Mike Sgaramella allowed six hits, six runs, four walks to the 14 Houston batters he faced in Sunday's loss, throwing 2.2 innings. Nova takes on Chicago State and Dartmouth before playing the Eagles.
WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE EAGLES
- BC starts the season 4-0 for the first time since 2009.
- The BC starting pitching staff of junior RHP Mike King, senior LHP Jesse Adams and freshmen righties Jacob Stevens and Thomas Lane did not surrender a run on the weekend. In fact, the BC pitching staff only allowed two total runs in the four games.
- Senior Logan Hoggarth went 3-for-6 against Northern Illinois to start his 2016 and extended his career-long hit streak to 11 games as he ended last season on an eight-game roll. He belted his first career home run in grand fashion - with a grand slam in the series finale against NIU on Feb. 21 - and recorded a career-high five RBIs. During his hit streak, Hoggarth has recorded 13 hits, 12 runs and nine RBIs. The hit streak is tied for 12th in BC record books (dating back to 2005).
- Sophomore Donovan Casey also began 2016 on a career-long hit streak and with seven hits on the weekend, extended it to 10 games. He led the Eagles with seven hits, six runs and a .636 batting average against the Huskies in the opening weekend. He has tallied 17 hits, 10 runs and five RBIs during his streak.
- Casey also picked up his first career save, throwing the final 1.1 innings in the 2-1 victory over NIU on Feb. 20. He did not surrender a hit, walk or run while recording one strikeout.
- Freshman RHP Jacob Stevens made his collegiate debut on Feb. 20 and tallied the most BC strikeouts in the young season, recording eight through six innings of work. He gave up just three hits, one walk and did not surrender a run in the BC win.
- Redshirt sophomore RHP Bobby Skogsbergh returned to action for the first time on Feb. 21 since March 24, 2015 as an injury sidelined him after only three appearances last season. He retired the side in order in the inning he pitched.
- Sophomore Jake Palomaki did not get on base in the first game of the 2016 season, ending his 37-game on-base streak and his 11-game hit streak. He then recorded at least a hit in the next three games, bringing his two-year total to at least one hit 35 of the 54 games played at BC, reaching base in 42 career contests. His 46 walks drawn in 2015 is a BC single-season record and his 11-game hit streak ranks 12th in BC record books.
