BC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
• Thatcher Demko posted his eighth shutout in 25 games, tying the full single-season mark set by Cory Schneider during the 2005-06 season. The San Diego native stopped all 28 Notre Dame shots en route to his 11th-career blanking. The 6-foot-4 netminder is in fourth place all-time on the career shutout charts (11) and is four blanking behind Schneider who posted 15 shutouts over the course of 2004-07.
• Boston College cooled off college hockey's hottest team with the 4-0 shutout Friday night. The Fighting Irish had not lost in their last 12 games (9-0-3) before the Eagles exacted revenge from their 4-3 loss to ND at home on Dec. 10.
• Austin Cangelosi scored 16 seconds into the game to set the tone. The Estero, Fla., native has a knack for scoring early goals as Cangelosi scored 12 seconds into the Wisconsin game on Oct. 16.
• Zach Sanford scored the Eagles' second 5-on-3 goal of the season and first since Colin White scored one against Wisconsin on Oct. 16.
TURNING POINT
Austin Cangelosi lit the lamp 16 seconds in and Boston College never trailed in the contest. Thatcher Demko made several important stops on his way to shutting out the Fighting Irish and picking up his eighth blanking of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Before the Fighting Irish could even get its bearings, Austin Cangelosi attacked 16 seconds into the frame.
Scott Savage accepted the victorious draw and shifted over the Steve Santini on BC's right dot. The Eagle forwards crashed the zone and Santini flung the rubbed towards the net. The puck kicked off an Irish defensemen behind the net and Austin Cangelosi descended upon the far post. The puck had not even made its way back to the goal line extended, but Cangelosi swatted at it with the backhand and it hopped over ND's Cal Petersen for the 1-0 lead.
After Boston College killed off a Michael Kim hooking infraction (10:19), the Eagles maintained their momentum and capitalized off of an ND turnover near its blue line to make it 2-0.
Adam Gilmour stripped the puck loose and worked a give-and-go with Miles Wood through the seam. Colin White snuck through Notre Dame's attempted breakup and Wood slipped the disc back to White on the goalmouth for the east tap in at 12:55 and a 2-0 BC advantage.
BC controlled the tempo to start the second period but did not see dividends until 14:58 of the frame.
Ian McCoshen connected with Wood on a long outlet pass along the far boards in the neutral zone. Wood carted it into Notre Dame's zone and popped it Gilmour on the crease. Gilmour took one shot, gathered his own rebound and roofed the backhander over a sprawled Petersen for the 3-0 lead.
Just after the Eagles' third goal, the Irish were unraveled with a too many men call at 16:20. Moments later, Dennis Gilbert was cited for high sticking at 17:14 to yield a 1:07-window of 5-on-3 advantage for Boston College as the second period concluded. The Eagles countered 29 seconds later.
White was the catalyst, dispensing the puck to Alex Tuch from the slot on the near post. With ample room, Tuch zipped the puck through the crease where Zach Sanford was stationed to paddle the one-timer feed across the goal line at 17:42 for the 4-0 lead on the power play.
Notre Dame had three opportunities on the power play in the third period, but Demko continued to be a wall between the pipes and denied the Fighting Irish's nine shots in the third frame to preserve the 4-0 final.
