HOW IT HAPPENED
Connecticut struck first at 7:16 of the first period, beating Thatcher Demko on the near post for the 1-0 lead. Jeff Wight skated it out of BC's end and flung it into the corner where Derek Pratt fished it out to Jesse Schwartz in the crease. Schwartz gathered his own rebound and beat Demko short side.
Boston College turned the tide heading into the second period as Travis Jeke tied it up on the backhand with 2:55 to go in the first frame.
Christopher Brown won a draw to the right of UConn netminder Tanner Creel and rimmed it to the opposite corner where Chris Calnan broke loose and chased down the loose disc. Jeke broke out to the far post and Calnan connected with the pass and Jeke buried the backhander to tie it up, 1-1.
It only took 2:30 into the second period for the Eagles to capitalize on their momentum and take their first lead of the game on an Alex Tuch laser.
Josh Couturier backhanded a Connecticut dump into BC's zone out to Zach Sanford on the red line. Tuch broke free down the ride side, corralled Sanford's dish and zipped it past Creel at 2:30 for the 2-1 advantage.
Patrick Kirtland cinched up the contest at 7:28 of the second period on a broken Eagle play coming up ice. Johnny Austin broke up BC's charge up ice and shifted to the right side of UConn's blue line where Joona Kunnas corralled the puck. Kunnas connected with Evan Richardson in stride and Kirtland joined him in the zone to his left. Richardson relayed it to Kirtland and he snapped it by Demko on the left dot to tie it, 2-2.
Miles Wood drew a hooking call on Austin at 14:21 of the second period and after Demko rushed onto the bench and BC tossed out its extra skater, the Eagles pounced and regained the lead at 16:15.
Wood, who generated the play by drawing the infraction, was the catalyst by getting the puck to the slot where Zach Sanford awaited for the one-timer. Sanford blasted it off the cross bar but Colin White was in position to brush it over the goal line off the carom for the 3-2 lead.
The first half of the third stanza yielded zero goals before UConn crafted the third tie of the game at 11:04, taking advantage of an Austin Cangelosi high-sticking call (10:46)
Shawn Pauly sent the puck from the near boards through the zone to Thompson on the doorstep. Demko stopped the initial attempt from Thompson, but Max Letunov skated in and flung the wrist shot past Demko's blocker to make it 3-3 on the power play.
Ryan Fitzgerald had a late opportunity on Creel with about 48 seconds left, but the UConn netminder stood his ground and forced the game into overtime.
UConn triggered twice on Demko while BC mustered one shot on Creel in the extra session but the game resulted in a 3-3 stalemate.
