BC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
• With the tie on Saturday, Boston College is now 7-1-1 in its last nine trips down Comm Ave. to Agganis Arena.
• Ryan Fitzgerald's game-tying goal put him in the team lead for goals scored this season (13) and tied for the lead in points (13-15-28) with Colin White.
• Ian McCoshen is on his first four-game point streak since Feb. 14-27, 2014. The Faribault, Minn., native has accounted for three goals and four assists over his recent offensive outburst.
TURNING POINT
• Boston University's Matt Grzelcyk drew first blood at 11:10 of the second period but Boston College did not relent as Ryan Fitzgerald scored the equalizer with 2:05 left in the contest to provide the Eagles with a three-point weekend over their archrival.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first period yielded gritty penalty killing and no score on either side. Boston College's penalty kill was tested first after Matthew Gaudreau and Ian McCoshen were whistled for tripping and high-sticking, respectively, at 7:18 and 9:14. Thatcher Demko crafted a huge stop on Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson on the doorstep to keep Boston University off the board.
BU's Jordan Greenway (roughing) and John MacLeod (interference) gave the Eagles a lengthy 5-on-3 man advantage at 12:09 of the first period after taking penalties at 11:31 and 12:09. Boston College triggered from all angles but could no find the back of the net.
The Terriers managed to kill off a Doyle Somerby cross-checking call cited at 8:41 of the second thanks to two huge stops from BU's Sean Maguire. With the defense stand, BU gained momentum and turned it up ice at Demko. Fosrbacka Karlsson was originally stuffed with the left pad of Demko's, but the puck caromed to the slot where Danny O'Regan tossed it back at BC's net. Matt Grzelcyk was situated between the circles and tipped it past Demko at 11:10 to take a 1-0 lead.
As the third period waned on, Boston College possessed in Boston University's end for almost the entire second half. Maguire thwarted several Eagle bids before Ryan Fitzgerald wired the wrister to the back of the net with 2:05 left to play in regulation.
McCoshen triggered the play by winning a battle on the backboards and rimming it out to Gaudreau on the far post. With Fitzgerald streaking in, Gaudreau hurled a no-look backhand to Fitzgerald in the slot who followed with a wrister off the crossbar into the net for the equalizer with 2:05 remaining in regulation.
Neither club could settle the final in regulation, so the contest went into overtime. BC tested Maguire four more times in the five-minute window, but to no avail as Boston College and Boston University tied, 1-1.
