BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Freshman Jake Palomaki drew two walks in the game, extending his on-base streak to 25 games. He has drawn at least one walk in 11 of the last 15 games.
- Sophomore Johnny Adams led off the sixth with single through the left side. He has a hit in eight of the last 10 games and has reached base safely in the last eight.
- Senior Blake Butera led the Eagles with a 2-for-4 day. He has at least one hit in eight of the last 10 games as well.
After the two teams played even baseball for the first three and a half innings, the Tar Heels scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth, while UNC starter JB Bukauskas did not allow a run through seven.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Heels got on the board in the fourth after senior right-handed starter John Gorman was able to get out of a jam in each of the previous innings. With one down, Logan Warmoth singled and moved to second on a grounder to first. Zack Gahagan knocked one to center to scores Warmoth before Gorman got out of the inning with a fly ball.
- UNC added a run in the fifth with two outs. With runners on first and second due to walks, Joe Dudek roped one back up the middle, making it 2-0 Heels. Gorman got out of the jam of runners on the corners with a strikeout looking.
- The Tar Heels added two more in the sixth with two outs and new pitcher redshirt junior RHP Geoffrey Murphy on the mound. After getting two quick outs, Murphy walked Brian Miller and he stole second. Skye Bolt knocked one to right, allowing Miller to score and he advanced to third on as freshman right-fielder Donovan Casey slipped on the wet grass. Junior RHP John Nicklas entered the game and gave up a double to right center to make a 4-0 game.
- The fifth North Carolina run came in the seventh with senior LHP Nick Poore on the hill. Two base hits put runners at the corners with one down and Alex Raburn drove one in with a sac fly to right. Redshirt junior LHP Tyler Hinchliffe came in to pitch and after surrendering a hit, he got out of the inning with a K.
- The Eagles got on the board in the eighth after Palomaki drew his second walk and Butera tallied his second hit of the day. Junior Joe Cronin grounded one to short and second baseman Elijah Sutherland's throw went wide to first on the double play attempt, allowing Palomaki to score.
- UNC got the run back in the bottom of the inning as redshirt sophomore RHP Luke Fernandes entered the game but only threw two pitches before exiting. Senior RHP Travis Ferrick took his spot and walked lead-off hitter Adam Pate. A stolen base and groundout advanced Pate to third and Korey Dunbar brought him home on a double to left.
