Fort Myers, Fla. - The Boston College baseball team lost, 1-0, to the Boston Red Sox in the 25th annual exhibition game in front of 7,821 fans at JetBlue Park on Tuesday afternoon. Both the BC and Red Sox players honored former BC captain Pete Frates (2004-07) by wearing jerseys with the number three and his name on their backs.
Prior to the start of the game, Frates and his family was honored for their commitment to finding a cure for ALS, which he was diagnosed with in March 2012 at the age of 27. Frates' parents, John and Nancy, and his wife Julie, holding six-month-old daughter, Lucy, presented Red Sox manager John Farrell and BC head coach Mike Gambino with the game ball after a video detailing Frates' accomplishments, including the success of the Ice Bucket Challenge, played on the video board.
Once the game started, the Eagles played the professional team hard. The one-run loss marked the fourth time in the 25-year history between the two Northern squads that BC lost by one run.
The Eagles had a chance to take a lead in the third. Sophomore Nick Sciortino led off with a double to the corner in left. With two down, senior Blake Butera singled to left center and Sciortino rounded third and tried to cross the plate, but Daniel Nava's throw beat them there.
Senior Travis Ferrick and junior Chris Shaw also tallied hits in the game.
The Red Sox scored their only run in the sixth with redshirt junior right-hander Geoffrey Murphy on the hill. Jemile Weeks led off with a triple to right but Murphy was able to get a chopper back to the mound for the first out, holding Weeks at third. After walking Allen Craig, Murphy got Garin Cecchini swinging for the second out. Blake Swihart singled to center to plate Weeks for the only run of the game. Murphy got a fly ball to center to end the inning.
Redshirt junior LHP Tyler Hinchliffe, freshman RHP Brian Rapp and freshman LHP Carmen Giampetruzzi also tallied strikeouts.
The jerseys worn by Boston College are up for auction at bceagles.com/auctions until March 17. All proceeds will go to the Pete Frates No. 3 Fund.
The Eagles (5-6) return to action Friday, March 6 when they open with a three-game set at No. 22 Florida State at 6 p.m. Friday's and Sunday's games will be broadcast on ESPN 3.
