HOW IT HAPPENED
Boston College was outshooting New Hampshire early on, but a hooking penalty to Ian McCoshen looked to tip momentum in UNH's favor. The Eagles had other ideas after Ryan Fitzgerald won a draw in BC's end to Colin White and moments later, R. Fitzgerald buried a short-handed wrister nine seconds into the penalty kill.
Steve Santini took Fitzgerald's draw to the goal line extended and connected with White behind the net. White relayed the disc to R. Fitzgerald in the neutral zone. With a Wildcat in his face, R. Fitzgerald fired a wrist shot two strides past the blue line to the back of the net on the kill to give BC a 1-0 lead at 6:23.
New Hampshire was granted its second power play after Zach Sanford was called for charging at 16:25 of the first and the Wildcats cashed in over a minute later. Matt Dawson corralled a pass from Matias Cleland and zipped it over Thatcher Demko's glove at 17:40 to knot the game, 1-1.
Boston College was granted a 1:02 of 5-on-3 early in the second period, but UNH was able to keep the Eagles off the board with the two-man advantage.
Midway through the second, Richard Boyd was hit with an interference call at 10:22, and this time the Eagles cashed in.
The Eagles worked it around and Alex Tuch managed to get a clean shot on UNH goaltender Danny Tirone. The puck kicked out to Doherty just below the left dot and Doherty took advantage of an open left side of the net at 11:30 to regain the Eagles' lead, 2-1.
Matthew Gaudreau gave the Eagles their first two-goal cushion of the night on strong forechecking from White behind the Wildcats' cage.
The Eagles created possession deep in their zone but UNH tried to sweep it out. White snuck in from behind and lifted the puck from UNH behind the net, wheeled around to the net for a take on Tirone. The initial stop was made, but Gaudreau swarmed in from the left side and banged home the rebound at 7:45 of the third period for a 3-1 advantage.
John Furgele answered Gaudreau's call at 10:04 on goal in tight on Demko to make it 3-2. Ara Nazarian connected on the lengthy pass to Furgele in front and he was able to sneak it underneath Demko's pads to close the gap to a goal once again.
At 14:31, Miles Wood took advantage of a Wildcat turnover on the red line along the far boards and turned into another two-goal lead for Boston College.
Wood scooped up a loose puck after UNH tripped along the boards and Doherty skated down the slot with no one between him and the New Hampshire net. Wood perfectly timed the pass and Doherty wired it past Tirone at 14:31 of the third period for the 4-2 advantage.
Under a minute later, the Eagles added a fifth marker on a strong cycle in UNH's end.
Alex Tuch won a battle in the corner and sent the puck through the zone to Casey Fitzgerald on top of the right circle. C. Fitzgerald blasted it towards the net and Adam Gilmour was parked in the slot to create the screen. Gilmour managed to get his blade on the puck and tipped it past Tirone at 15:12 to give Boston College the three-goal buffer, 5-2.
Tyler Kelleher added a late goal at 18:33 to give UNH hope as the Wildcats were down only two, 5-3, with 1:27 left in regulation, but an empty net goal from Wood capped the 6-3 triumph for Boston College. Santini added his third assist of the night by rimming the puck out of UNH's end to R. Fitzgerald on the right dot. R. Fitzgerald and Wood raced it up towards the unguarded cage together and R. Fitzgerald selflessly passed it to Wood for the empty-netter at 19:03 to seal the 6-3 victory.
