October 19, 2014 | Field Hockey
Louisville, K.Y. - No. 17 Boston College defeated California, 5-1, Sunday afternoon on neutral territory at the University of Louisville. The Eagles are now 11-5 on the season and 2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play after their road trip in Kentucky.
The Eagles' offense pressured the Golden Bears early, scoring the first three goals consecutively. Sophomore forward Eryn McCoy netted her eighth goal of the season, and third of the weekend, to put the Eagles up, 1-0, 15 minutes into the first frame.
Sophomore forward Leah Frome extended the Eagles' lead to 2-0 off of AshLeigh Sebia's pass from the right side of the circle to the left post for her fifth goal of the season.
Senior midfielder Emma Plasteras notched the third BC goal after a corner on her own rebound with ten minutes remaining in the first half for her sixth goal of the season.
Boston College controlled the offensive attack in the first 35 peppering Cal with eight shots. The BC defense held the Golden Bears to just one shot in the first half. Heading into halftime, the Eagles held a 3-0 lead over the Cal Golden Bears.
"It was great to have a variety of players scoring goals for us. I was very pleased with the teams possession game today and ability to keep the ball for prolonged periods of time," said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
Cal responded to the Eagles' scoring just two minutes into the second half. The Golden Bears' Nicole Wallstedt narrowed BC's lead to 3-1 on Cal's second shot of the day.
Five minutes later, Emily McCoy answered with her team-leading ninth goal of the season to make it 4-1, Eagles.
Kelcie Hromisin scored BC's fifth goal of the day, and her fifth of the season, beating goalkeeper Kori Griswold on the left side of the cage to extend the Eagles' lead to a final score of 5-1.
"We need to continue to work on managing some chaotic moments during the game and maintain our composure through those, but I am confident we have the ability to do this during this week of preparation," said Lamb.
Boston College led the shot count, 22-8, to power past the Golden Bears. The BC offense forced Cal goalie Kori Griswold to make 14 saves. Junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane recorded four saves throughout the game.
"Once again, Leah Settipane made some critcal saves during a Cal surge of attacking pressure.
"Compliments to the entire team for their focus and determination this weekend. I am thrilled to take this momentum in to our final two games of the regular season," said Lamb.
The Eagles are back in action for their final home game of the season against ACC opponent Virginia. Boston College will honor its seven seniors before the matchup against the Cavs.
