Newton, Mass. - No. 14 Boston College field hockey defeated No. 8 Virginia, 5-3, Friday night at the Newton Sports Complex. With their victory over the Cavaliers, the Eagles move to 12-5 on the season and 3-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. BC's win against UVA is its fourth win over a top-ten opponent this season.
Before the start of the game, Boston College recognized its seven seniors for their four years of dedication and commitment to the field hockey team. Abby Bascetta, Sarah Hospodar, Nina Baumberger Altirriba, Nicole Morris, Hannah Nedeau, Emma Plasteras, and Katlyn Soucy were honored with their parents before the 7 p.m. start.
The scoring started early in the conference matchup between the Eagles and the Cavs. Just over a minute into the game, BC's Emily McCoy netted her team-leading 10th goal of the season following up on a rebound to beat goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone on the right side.
"We talked about having no regrets at the end of this game, regardless of the result, and the girls really embraced that. They worked hard for the entire 70 minutes," said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
UVA responded with a goal two minutes later as Caleigh Foust netted the equalizer on a rebound. Foust then scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Tara Vittese along the baseline to put the Cavs ahead, 2-1, in the seventh minute.
The Eagles rallied back later in the half on goals from junior forward Kelcie Hromisin and senior midfielder Katlyn Soucy. Soucy scored the go-ahead goal on a redirection from Emily McCoy's shot.
Boston College headed into halftime carrying a 3-2 lead over Virginia.
BC kept the pressure strong in the second frame, tallying nine shots and forcing a UVA goalkeeper change late in the half.
Sophomore forward Eryn McCoy notched her ninth goal of the season after some great ball movement in front of the net to extend the Eagles' lead to 4-2 with junior forward AshLeigh Sebia on the assist.
In the 55th minute, a penalty stroke was awarded to Virginia's Tara Vittese, who narrowed the BC lead to 4-3 with 15 minutes remaining.
Senior midfielder/back Abby Bascetta was given a penalty stroke five minutes later. Bascetta's stroke was good for her third goal of the season and brought a 5-3 final score into the Eagles' win column.
Boston College and Virginia each tallied 15 shots throughout the contest. Junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane recorded eight saves to keep the Cavs' scoring at bay.
"I feel very good about the win. What's crazy about the ACC this year is that this game is just more proof that the league is so tight. Every game is an opportunity for us to win. I think that's the real difference this year for BC field hockey. They believe every time they step on the field, if they execute well, they can win. They certainly proved that tonight," said Lamb.
BC field hockey is back in action at Harvard on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.
