Cambridge, Mass – No. 11 Boston College field hockey defeated Harvard, 1-0, Tuesday night at Jordan Field in its last regular season game of the year. The Eagles improved to 13-5 and extended their win streak against the Crimson to nine games with their victory.
The Eagles started the scoring early as junior forward Kelcie Hromisin netted her seventh goal of the season on a pass from sophomore midfielder Emily McCoy to put Boston College up, 1-0, in the first minute of play.
Boston College had a dangerous scoring opportunity on its first attack penalty corner with ten minutes remaining in the first frame. Sophomore forward Eryn McCoy fired a shot from the right side of the circle, which went just wide of the Harvard cage.
The Crimson outshot BC, 5-2, but Hromisin’s first-minute goal would be the lone score of the half. The Eagles headed into halftime carrying a 1-0 lead.
Boston College came out with control of the ball in the second half. Senior forward Nina Baumberger Altirriba had a great opportunity on BC’s third corner of the night with ten minutes left, which missed the Crimson’s goal by inches.
Although Boston College maintained possession in Harvard’s half for the majority of the second frame, the Eagles could not extend their one-goal lead.
Harvard capitalized on a loose ball in the Boston College circle with seconds remaining in the game to fire off two quick shots on goal, both saved by junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane. Settipane recorded seven saves against the Crimson to secure the Eagles’ 1-0 victory.
“We talked about what we were most impressed with about Harvard and that was their work rate and how competitive, aggressive, and physical they were. Harvard had more desire to win that game. The great thing about that for us is that’s all controllable. What we need to change from tonight is all controllables. I know the strengths of our program are our work rate, how aggressive we are, our will to win. Those are all intangibles I know we have, we just have to get back to allowing those to come on the field a little more,” said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
The Eagles have a week off before traveling to Durham, N.C. for the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Boston College enters the tournament at its highest seed in program history with the No. 3 seed and will face #7 Syracuse. BC takes on the Orange Thursday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. on ESPN3.
