Durham, N.C. - No. 9 Boston College (13-6, 3-4 ACC) fell to No. 6 Syracuse (14-4, 3-4 ACC), 5-2, in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships Thursday, Nov. 6 at Duke. Junior forward Kelcie Hromisin netted both of the third-seeded Eagles' goals.
"It was an incredible opportunity to come out to the ACC Championships and play the sixth-ranked team in the country. We really felt that at this point we've brought our strongest team to the ACC Tournament," said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
Thirty seconds into the game, Syracuse went up, 1-0, on a goal by junior forward Emma Russell.
The Eagles battled back with an offensive rush to draw two back-to-back attack penalty corners. On BC's second corner, Emily McCoy fed the ball to Eryn McCoy, who fired a shot into traffic. Eryn's shot was tipped in by junior forward Kelcie Hromisin for her eighth goal of the season to even the score at one goal apiece.
The Orange went on a breakaway after stealing the ball at the half, but junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane made a kick save to defend the rush with 23 minutes remaining in the half.
Syracuse came up with the go-ahead goal, Emma Russell's second of the night, with just under three minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
Boston College earned seven attack penalty corners during the first frame against Syracuse's one, but the Eagles headed into half time down, 2-1.
BC came out strong in the second half and forced a yellow card on the Orange's Kati Nearhouse. Hromisin scored her second goal of the night just one minute into frame two to once again knot the game up, 2-2.
Syracuse's Emma Russell put the Orange ahead, 3-2, on a reverse chip in from the top of the circle with 12 minutes remaining.
With six minutes and 40 seconds on the clock, the Eagles pulled goalie Leah Settipane and subbed in a kickback for a man advantage to overcome their one-goal defecit.
Junior back Jordyn Hamilton made two saves with an empty net behind her, but with four minutes left, Syracuse's Russell notched her fourth goal of the contest to give the Orange a 4-2 lead. A late goal from Kati Nearhouse would bring the final score to 5-2, Syracuse.
The Orange held the shot advantage, 20-16. Boston College created nine attack penalty corner opportunities against SU's six. Junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane recorded eight saves against the Orange.
"There was a lot of action, a lot of back-and-forth. That's what makes it exciting. That's ACC field hockey. The conference is in such an incredible place for field hockey right now. There hasn't been a game this year that hasn't presented a good opportunity for our kids. The level of play is fantastic and there's going to be a lot going on during the games. It's a tribute to the coaches, the universities, but ultimately to the kids playing this game right now. They're doing a great job," said Lamb.
