Baseball Hosts Miami for ACC Weekend Series

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College baseball hosts Miami in a three-game series, looking for its first Atlantic Coast Conference wins.
The Eagles (6-34, 0-20 ACC) lost a three-game set in Winston-Salem, N.C., to Wake Forest last weekend and dropped Wednesday's game to St. John's, 9-5, in Norwich, Conn. The Hurricanes (28-16, 10-11 ACC) took two-of-three from Clemson at home last weekend, falling, 1-0, in the first game before bouncing back with 2-1 and 7-0 victories on Saturday and Sunday. They also went on to beat FAU, 6-4, in a midweek contest on Wednesday.
The Canes hold the 14-2 series advantage over the Eagles, dating back to 2003. The two teams have played each other in five series since BC joined the ACC in 2006. One the Eagles' wins came at the 2009 ACC Tournament, with a 10-1 victory.
Last year, 13th-ranked Miami took all three games in Coral Gables to open 2012 conference play. In the first game, the Hurricanes won, 7-3, after the Eagles surrendered a two-run lead, giving up five in the seventh, including a three-run homer. Current junior RHP Eric Stevens went 5.1 innings and allowed five hits, one run, three walks and struck out five. Graduate student LHP Nate Bayuk shouldered the loss, going one inning and allowing two hits, three runs, one walk and two strikeouts. On Saturday, BC fell, 5-3, after leading by one heading into the bottom of the eighth. BC outhit Miami, 12-8, and did not commit an error on the evening.Senior starter RHP Hunter Gordon pitched a career-high 6.2 innings and tied a career high with six strikeouts. He allowed two runs, walked four and gave up five hits. Junior LHP Steve Green tallied the loss, going one inning, allowing two hits and three runs. In the series finale, Miami earned a 4-1 victory . Junior RHP Matt Alvarez recorded the loss as he went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, four runs, two earned, five walks and four strikeouts.
Before Friday's game, the Eagles will don Boston College Police Department hats to thank the BCPD for their efforts in keeping the campus safe during the Boston Marathon bombings and city lockdown during the week of April 15. Lieutenant King of the BCPD will throw on the first pitch and BCPD will be on hand for the pregame ceremonies.
The Eagles are teaming up with the Wounded Warriors Project (WWP) to honor current and former military members who have and continue to serve the United States for Saturday's game against Miami. The Eagles are wearing specially-designed Under Armour uniforms and WWP members will be part of the pregame ceremonies. Before the start of the contest between the Eagles and the Hurricanes, Wounded Warriors will throw out the first pitch and serve as honorary captains. Members of the Boston College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be on hand to unfurl the American flag during the National Anthem as the BC ROTC cadets will present the colors, sing the anthem and will return to sing "God Bless America" during the seventh-inning stretch. WWP bracelets and foam fingers will be given out at the game.
On Thursday, local alumni of the Wounded Warriors softball team participated in a game with the baseball team on Shea Field. Before the game, Boston-native Erick Millette, who survived 17 different attacks by improvised explosive devices (or IEDs) during his two tours of duty in Iraq, spoke to BC student-athletes.
