CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The BC softball team opened up their 2013 campaign with a 10-7 loss to Missouri State on Friday.  The Bears’ six run first inning proved to be the difference as the Eagles valiantly tried to erase an early 8-0 deficit.

Freshman Stephanie Lord recorded three strikeouts over seven innings pitched in her collegiate debut as she entered the first inning in relief of Chelsea Dimon (0-1).

Chelsea Jones threw a complete game for the Bears, allowing seven earned runs and striking out three to improve to 5-3 this season.

The Bears jumped on the Eagles early, scoring six runs before BC was able to record an out.  A three-run double by MSU’s Stevie Pierce provided most of the damage in the first as Lord was able to get out of the jam in her first collegiate inning.

The Bears added single runs in the second and third innings to go up 8-0, but then the BC bats came to life as the Eagles put up five in the third inning to cut the deficit to 8-5.

Alana DiMaso’s first double of the game knocked in Jessie Daulton to put the Eagles on the board.  A combination of three hits, two errors, and walk opened the door for BC to tack on four more in the inning.

Trailing 9-5 in the fifth, BC inched closer as DiMaso’s second double of the game and third RBI cut the Bears lead to 9-7. MSU tacked on another run and then Jones shut the door on the Eagles’ comeback hopes as she retired the last seven batters of the game to secure the victory.

Game two of the Eagles’ opening day doubleheader is slated for 3:30 p.m. against Miami-Ohio.

Notes: The seven runs were the most that BC has scored in the season opener since 2006 (11-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe) … DiMaso finished 2-for-3, 3 RBI, R while Andrea Filler was 2-for-4, R in the season opener.
