Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team split a doubleheader with Virginia on Saturday evening at Shea Field. Captain Rene Delagrammaticas went 2-for-3, hit a two-run home run and scored twice as the Eagles (19-11, 1-3 ACC) fell 7-4 in game one. Junior Nicole D'Argento homered twice and drove in four runs as BC responded with a season-high four long balls in a 10-4 victory over the Cavaliers (17-13, 4-4 ACC) in the second duel.
Freshman Andrea Filler batted a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game two. The second baseman scored three runs and homered in the win. Senior Ali Lynette-Krech drove in three runs with her first long ball of the season in the second meeting.
Sophomore Amanda Horowitz (8-5) picked up both decisions on the day. The Westminster, Calif. product threw a total of 6.1 innings, struck out one batter, walked five and allowed five earned runs on five hits.
Melanie Mitchell (11-7) earned the win in game one, throwing a complete game with 13 strikeouts and six hits allowed. Rachel Gillen (5-5) shouldered the loss in game two, allowing eight earned runs on an equal number of hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
D'Argento got the start for BC in game one. The righty lasted 5.1 innings, struck out four batters and gave up seven hits, four earned runs and a walk before being relieved by senior Morgan Kidd. The Peachtree City, Ga. native handled two-thirds of an inning, registering one K, two walks and allowed one hit, before being subbed out of the lineup for a bat. Kidd returned to start game two, striking out three batters, walking four and giving up two earned runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first. D'Argento grounded to short and beat out the throw to open the frame. Delagrammaticas laid down a sac bunt to move her teammate up, but Mitchell muffed the throw to first to allow the captain to reach base and D'Argento to take third. When Delagrammaticas stole the next bag, the UVA second baseman dropped the pickoff attempt, bringing in D'Argento, 1-0. Senior Brittany Wilkins (2-for-5) then singled to short to put runners on the corners for BC. The catcher moved towards second, drawing a throw that Delagrammaticas seized as a chance to score, 2-0.
Boston College extended its advantage with two runs in the fifth. Filler reached when the Cavaliers' second basemen failed to get her glove on a fly ball hit to center field. With two outs and a full count, Delagrammaticas sent a high inside pitch over the wall in right center to give BC a 4-0 lead.
Virginia tied the game in the sixth, 4-4. Kennedy Byxbee drew a leadoff walk and hustled around the bases on Marcy Bowdren's double down the left field line, 4-1. Megan Harris singled to left field to put runners on the corners, but Stephanie Harris homered to right center to even the score at four.
The Cavaliers put up three runs in the seventh to claim game one, 7-4. Bowdren singled through the left side and was moved up on a sac bunt to open the inning. After Horowitz retired Martinez, S. Harris was intentionally walked. Bowdren then stole third to further her scoring position, but Kristen Hawkins homered to center to bring in the winning runs.
In the second game, Virginia opened the scoring with two runs in the second. Kennedy Byxbee hit a one out homer to right center, 1-0. Kristen Hawkins was hit by a pitch, before Taylor Williams' blooper to right fell in front of BC. Speer scooped the ball and delivered a throw to Delagrammaticas to get Hawkins, who held up on the fly, at second. Gianna Cippolloni followed with a single through the right side and two walks plate another run for the Cavs.
D'Argento's three-run homer gave the Eagles the lead in the bottom half of the second, 3-2. Filler hit a leadoff single to left center in the leadoff slot. Sophomore Tory Speer (2R, RBI) singled through the left side and Lynette-Krech delivered a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position. D'Argento then put a 0-1 pitch over the wall in right center to put BC up.
Two long balls added to the Eagles lead, 7-2, in the third. Filler leadoff with a walk and beat out a throw to second on a fielder's choice from freshman CJ Chirichigno (R, RBI). The Fort Wayne, Ind. native got tagged out at third with the double steal on and Speer drew a walk. Lynette-Krech knocked in three runs with her first home run of year, 6-2, and D'Argento followed with her second in as many at bats to cap BC's five run third.
In the fourth, Filler launched the first pitch she faced to center field to put the Eagles up six, 8-2.
Virginia closed the gap by two runs in the fifth, 8-4. M. Harris drew a one out walk and S. Harris lined a pitch over the left field wall for her second home run of the day.
The Eagles posted two runs in the sixth, 10-4. Freshman Chelsea Dimon drew a walk and took third when Filler doubled to left center. Chirchigno plated Dimon with a bloop single to left and Filler snuck in when Speer grounded out to the pitcher.
Solid defense closed out the game in the top of the seventh. The Cavs put their leadoff batter on with a walk. S. Harris sent the first pitch she saw back at Horowitz, who turned and initiated a 1-6-3 double play capped by Delagrammaticas and D'Argento. Byxbee grounded out to second to end the game.
The Eagles and the Cavaliers close out the series on Sunday, April 1. The start time for the rubber match has been moved up to 12 p.m. due to forecasted rain in the afternoon.
