Softball Topped by Virginia, 5-1

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – The Boston College softball team fell in its series finale with Virginia, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Shea Field. The Cavaliers (18-13, 5-4 ACC) used a three-run fourth inning to get past the Eagles (19-12, 1-5 ACC). Senior captain Brittany Wilkins went two-for-three at the plate, including her fifth home run of the season, and caught one runner stealing to lead BC in the loss.
Junior Nicole D’Argento (8-7) bore the loss. The pitcher the managed 5.2 innings, allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out four batters and walked a pair. Sophomore Amanda Horowitz tossed 1.1 innings of relief and gave up one run on two hits.
Melanie Mitchell (12-7) collected the win with her second complete game of the series. The righty registered 10 strikeouts, one walk and a single earned run on four hits.
Wilkins homered in the second to put Boston College up, 1-0. The catcher drove an 0-1 pitch deep to straightaway center, recording the 25th long ball of her career, fifth most in program history.
Virginia took the lead with three runs in the fourth, 3-1. Kennedy Byxbee led off with a single up the middle, but was thrown out at second on a 5-6 fielder’s choice by Karli Johnson. Kristen Hawkins was hit on the first pitch to put two UVA runners on for Taylor Williams, who’s singled landed on the left field line and spun into the wall to plate the tying run, 1-1. Both runners advanced as the Eagles tried to get the runner at home, leaving the chance for Alex Skinkis to bring in two runs with a double to left.
Both sides put runners on the fifth. Bowdren singled through the right side, but when S. Harris popped up a bunt and D’Argento fanned Byxbee, Wilkins gunned down Bowdren trying to steal second. CJ Chirichigno walked to lead off the bottom half of the inning and moved to third on two wild pitches, before a fly ball to deep center with two outs was hauled to end the threat.
UVA added insurance two insurance runs in the sixth, 5-1. After Horowitz fanned Johnson, Hawkins doubled off the wall in right center. Williams laid down a sac bunt to move her teammate, signaling the end of D’Argento’s day on the mound. Giannina Cipolloni then beat out a slow roller to first base, plating Hawkins in the process, 4-1. The center fielder then stole second and came around when Skinkis singled to right field.
The Eagles travel to UMass-Amherst for a meeting on Wednesday, April 4 at 4 p.m., before resuming conference play at NC State on Friday, April 6.
