KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Charlie Rugg scored in the second minute and classmate Justin Luthy stopped 12 shots in goal to lead the No. 10 Boston College men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Rhode Island Friday night at a rain-soaked URI Soccer Complex.
The goal was Rugg's second in the last three games and both were game-winners. He is now tied for the team lead with five goals. Senior Amit Aburmad provided the assist as he fed the ball into the box on the corner kick. It was his team-leading fifth assist of the year.
Rhode Island fired off 16 shots in the match and 12 of them were on net, but Luthy saved them all. His 12 saves were a career high and eight of them came in the second half.
The Eagles didn't waste any time and scored in just the second minute. Junior Kyle Bekker forced URI keeper Peyton Warwick to make a save just 30 seconds after the opening whistle. Luthy made a save on the other end of the pitch a minute later and then BC won a corner kick.
Aburmad took the corner and fed the ball into the near post where Rugg slipped a shot into the back of the net for the early BC lead.
The Rams controlled the pace in the second half but Luthy's career night kept them at bay. The biggest scare came in the 56th minute when Jamie Eckmayer hit the crossbar on a shot attempt. Mike Casey tried to put the rebound in for the equalizer but he was denied by the post.
Rhode Island (3-5-0) was able to record five shots on goal in the final 8:30 of the match but Luthy denied it each time. Matt Ribbens and Matt Sykes were the most dangerous for URI in the 90 minutes, getting off five and three shots, respectively.
Rugg recorded three shots in the match while Aburmad, Bekker and freshman Diego Medina-Mendez all had two.
BC (6-2-0) returns to the Ocean State Tuesday night when it faces Brown in Providence. The Bears eliminated the Eagles from the NCAA Tournament last season.
