PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman Diego Medina-Mendez and junior Charlie Rugg scored second half goals to lead the No. 13 Boston College men's soccer team to a 2-0 win against Brown Tuesday night at Stevenson Field.
Medina-Mendez scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute. It was his third goal of the year. Rugg added the insurance tally in the 77th minute, which was his team-leading sixth goal. Junior Colin Murphy was credited with an assist on Medina-Mendez's score.
Junior goalkeeper Justin Luthy recorded three saves in his third shutout of the season and second in as many matches.
The first 90 minutes were played evenly with both sides getting off five shots. Luthy was forced to make a pair of saves in the opening half while Brown's Sam Kernan-Schloss made one.
In the 57th minute of the match, Brown won a corner but couldn't convert. The Eagles took the ball down to the other end of the pitch where Murphy found Medina-Mendez for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Murphy nearly added a goal of his own 16 minutes later when he put back a Kyle Bekker shot that was blocked by a Bears defender. Murphy's shot attempt was denied by the post.
The BC offense kept pressing for the second goal and got it from Rugg in the 77th minute. After a scramble in the box, Rugg found himself with the ball at his foot and fired it to the left side of the goal for the 2-0 cushion.
BC (7-2-0) returns to conference play Friday night when it travels to Raleigh for a 7 p.m. meeting with NC State.
