Chestnut Hill, Mass. – The Boston College fell in a pair of tough decisions against USA Today/NFCA Coaches No. 20 Georgia Tech, 2-1, 11-2, on Saturday afternoon at Shea Field.
Sophomore Maria Pandolfo drove in the Eagles (14-29, 5-12 ACC) lone run in the first game, while the run production in game two came from freshman Tory Speer and senior Alison Kooistra.
Shouldering the losses versus the Yellow Jackets (41-8, 15-1 ACC) were senior Allison Gage and freshman Amanda Horowitz. In game one, Gage (6-12) threw 6.1 innings, struck out three batters, walked two and allowed two earned runs, before being relieved by Horowitz (4-10). The rookie retired both batters she faced and came back to start the second matchup, where she threw 1.2 innings, walked two, and allowed five runs on four hits.
Junior Morgan Kidd and sophomore Nicole D’Argento made relief appearances for BC in the second game. Both tossed 1.2 innings, with Kidd walking two batters and allowed two earned runs on three hits and D’Argento striking out one batter and giving up one earned run on four hits.
Kristen Adkins (19-5) and Lindsey Anderson (11-0) split the wins for Tech. In a complete game, Adkins struck out and walked five batters and allowed one run on a hit. Anderson only had to throw five innings, but struck out seven batters, walked three and allowed two runs on three hits.
The Eagles got on the board first, when junior Lizzy Ploen drew a walk, moved up when Tech failed to convert a double play and came around on a blooper to left center from sophomore Maria Pandolfo.
Tech evened the game in the fourth, 1-1. Kristine Priebe drew a walk and was pinch run for by Kelly Delashmit. A single to right center by Caitlin Jordan moved Delashmit to third, before the sub tagged up on foul out to the left field wall.
In the fifth, Pandolfo connected on a 2-2 pitch, driving the ball to deep right center, but Hayley Downs reached out and robbed the Eagle just before the ball went over the fence.
Priebe opened up the sixth with a homer down the left field line to give the Yellow Jackets the go ahead run, 2-1.
In the top of the seven, Kate Kuzma hit a ball hard to center, but Pandolfo returned the favor by making the catch as she crashed into the boards to prevent three runs from coming in.
In the bottom frame, the Eagles’ side was retired to end the game, 2-1. The second game started just as tight, but Tech opened the scoring with six runs in the second inning.
A lead-off double from Kuzma was followed by a homer to left center from Caitlin Jordan. Alysha Rudnik and Danielle Dike squeaked out of full counts against Horowitz to reach base and were bumped up on Downs’ sac bunt. BC got the next batter to pop up to first, but Ashley Thomas hit a triple to center to plate both runners and prompt the first pitching change. Two more walks loaded the bases for Tech, who then attempted to clear the bases on a sharply hit ball to deep right, but Ploen threw a laser to home where classmate Brittany Wilkins was there to protect the plate and get out of the inning, 6-0.
BC responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Speer tabbed Anderson for her eighth long ball of the year with a shot that hugged the left line to put the Eagles on the board, 6-1. Nicole Koszowski then came in to run for Gemma Ypparila, who reached when the Yellow Jackets mishandled a shot hit towards second. The freshman took second on Ploen’s blooper placed nicely on the left field line and hustled around the bases when Kooistra knocked a pitch off the wall in left.
Four Yellow Jacket runs in the fourth put BC behind, 10-2. Jones executed a one-out bunt to get on and was able to advance to third when a fielder’s choice at second got away from BC. A double from Kelsi Weseman drove in both runners and signaled the second Eagles’ change on the mound. Kuzma hit a single and took second when BC tried to get Weseman at home, before being waved around on a single to deep right that put Tech up by eight.
The scoring ended, 11-2, in the fifth when Delashmit – pinch running for Dike at first – was advance on a sac bunt and came around on a double to left from Thomas.
