Chestnut Hill, Mass. - An upset by the Boston College softball team over the USA Today/NFCA No. 20 Georgia Tech brewed for six innings, but the Yellow Jackets (42-8, 16-1 ACC) escaped from the Eagles (14-30, 5-13), 9-7, on senior day at Shea Field on Sunday.
BC outhit Tech, 10-9, including three home runs that came from sophomores Nicole D'Argento and Maria Pandolfo and freshman Tory Speer. D'Argento's long ball moved her into a three-way tie for fourth place on BC's single-season home run list (11), while Pandolfo's three RBI and Speer's two runs led the Eagles.
D'Argento (2-3) shouldered the loss for BC, coming in to stifle a Georgia Tech two-run second inning. The Ashland, Mass. native tossed 5.2 innings, struck out three batters, walked two and allowed four earned runs on five hits.
Senior Allison Gage started the game, lasted 1.1 innings, walked one batter and allowed three earned runs on four hits.
Hope Rush (12-3) got the win. The sophomore struck out three Eagles, walked three and gave up seven runs on eight hits. Lindsey Anderson picked up the save with three strikeouts, one walk and a pair of hits in two innings of work.
The Jackets jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the first inning, but the Eagles answered back with five to take control, 5-2.
Tech's scoring came on Kelsi Weseman's home run to center, bringing in Ashley Thomas, who had reached on a one-out single.
In the bottom of the first, D'Argento kicked things off with a solo shot to straight away center. Two outs later, Speer took four straight balls from Rush to get on and took second on senior Gemma Ypparila's infield single. Junior Ali Lynette-Krech plated Speer with a double to left center, tying the game, 2-2, before Pandolfo stepped up and slugged a three-run shot to over the fence in left center field.
In the second, senior Carolyn Jones snagged a liner to right preventing a sure extra base hit from Alysha Rudnik, but the next batter, Jessica Weaver, was able to find the gap for a double. Hayley Downs brought in Weaver with another double and came around to score on an Eagles error, prompting the pitching change for the Eagles at 5-4.
Georgia Tech tied things at five with one run in the third. Kate Kuzma drew a one-out walk and moved around to third on a pair of BC errors, which loaded the bases. Weaver's second hit of the day brought in Kuzma to even the game. Weaver's three-run homer put the Yellow Jackets on top in the top of fifth, but Speer tagged Rush for a her ninth home run of the year and kept the pressure on the nation's 20th ranked team, 8-7.
In the sixth, a sac fly from Kristine Priebe plated Thomas from third for Tech's ninth run.
The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but grounded out to first to end the threat.
Boston College will return to action with a doubleheader on Wednesday at UMass, slated for 4 p.m, and close out the regular season at home against Boston University on Thursday at 4 p.m.
