Eagles Wrap Jay McGillis Spring Football Game

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore quarterback Chase Rettig completed 20-of-29 passing attempts for a game-high 182 yards while senior tight end Lars Anderson caught seven passes for a game-high 78 yards and sophomore wide receiver Bobby Swigert caught six passes for 68 yards to lead Boston College's offense in a 36-35 victory over the defense in the annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Football game on Saturday in Alumni Stadium.
Both the offense and defense received points for various plays/achievements, including first downs (one point), explosive plays of 25 yards or more (two points), sacks (one point), pass breakups (one point) and turnovers (three points).
At halftime, senior cornerback Donnie Fletcher was named this year's recipient of the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to a defensive back. McGillis was a starting defensive back for Boston College who passed away from leukemia in 1992. The Eagles' spring game is played in his honor each year.
Junior QB Dave Shinskie completed 9-of-15 attempts for 103 yards while classmate Mike Marscovetra went 4-for-14 for 35 yards and one interception - by senior LB Will Thompson in the second quarter.
Anderson and Swigert led all receivers while redshirt freshman running back Tahj Kimble accounted for 50 total yards of offense, catching four passes for 13 yards and rushing 13 times for 37 yards.
Junior running back Mike Javorski ran the ball 20 times for 82 yards to lead all running backs.
Sophomore PK Nate Freese missed from 35 yards on the opening drive, hitting the left upright. Freese connected from 38 yards on the opening drive of the second half.
On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Kevin Pierre-Louis recorded the lone double-digit tackling effort with 11 stops. Five players recorded five tackles - junior LB Luke Kuechly, junior DB Jim Noel, senior SS Dominick LeGrande, sophomore LB Andre Lawrence and sophomore LB Jake Sinkovec.
Senior LB Will Thompson recorded a 15-yard interception return in the second quarter.
Scrimmage Notes: At the conclusion of the game, head coach Frank Spaziani announced to the team that junior wide receiver Hampton Hughes (Dallas, Texas), a graduate of Jesuit College Prep, has been awarded a scholarship.
Former Eagle and current Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan spoke to the team prior to the game and joined several former Eagles on the sideline during the game.
