CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team lost both games of a Saturday doubleheader to Clemson, 7-5 and 9-2, at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field to complete the weekend series against the Tigers.
Sunday's series finale was moved to Saturday due to impending weather Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Senior Garret Smith went 4-for-8 in the two games for BC (13-20, 6-11 ACC) with three doubles and three RBIs which all came in the first game. Sophomore Matt McGovern was 3-for-9 with a two-bagger.
Phil Pohl led Clemson (22-13, 9-9) at the dish by going 6-for-10 with an RBI and two runs while Brad Miller was 4-for-8 with a double and four RBIs.
GAME ONE
Smith did all of his damage in the first game of the doubleheader by going 4-for-4 with three doubles and driving in three of the five Eagles' runs in a 7-5 loss. Those four hits were a career high.
The Eagles got ahead early with a run in the bottom of the first. Junior Brad Zapenas led off with a walk and Smith roped one of his doubles down the left field line that brought him all the way around to score.
Clemson tied the game with a run of its own in the third. John Hinson and Pohl hit consecutive singles with one out to put runners on the corners and Jeff Schaus brought in the run with a sacrifice fly.
BC responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead, 3-1. Freshman Tom Bourdon led off with a double down the third base line and then Zapenas singled to put men on first and third. Smith hit the gap in left for an RBI double to give the lead back to BC and then Zapenas was safe at home on a fielder's choice to score the other run.
The Tigers tied the game again with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Schaus hit a one-out single and then Richie Shaffer followed with one of his own. A fielding error allowed the runners to advance to second and third, then a 4-3 groundout scored the first run. Will Lamb tied it with an RBI double to the gap in right.
Clemson took its first lead of the day with four runs in the seventh to make it 7-3. The Tigers rattled off six straight hits after the first batter was retired, highlighted by a Shaffer two-run double.
BC closed the gap by scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth but that is as close as it would get. McGovern led off with a single and then scored on another double to deep left-center by Smith. Junior Anthony Melchionda singled to put runners on the corners and classmate Andrew Lawrence found the hole on the right side for an RBI single to make it 7-5, but the next three batters were retired to end the rally.
The first five batters in the Clemson batting order had multi-hit games and an RBI. Hinson was 2-for-4 and scored twice while Pohl was 3-for-5. Schaus went 2-for-4 with two runs and Schaffer had a pair of hits and RBIs.
David Haselden got the win after throwing 5.2 innings of relief. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five. Alex Frederick got the save.
GAME TWO
Jonathan Meyer pitched 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven to lead Clemson to the 9-2 victory in the series finale.
Pohl went 3-for-5 in the contest with two runs while Miller went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Shaffer also drove in a pair.
McGovern led BC at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double. Senior Mike Sudol added an RBI triple.
Clemson opened the game with three runs in the top of the first. Hinson and Pohl started things off with consecutive singles and then a passed ball moved them both up a base. A wild pitch scored Hinson and then Miller hit an RBI single for the second run. Lamb walked to put two men on and then a double steal and a wild pitch plated the other run.
BC got on the board in the second with a pair of runs. Junior Kyle Prohovich hit a leadoff single and then Sudol launched a pitch off the wall in right for an RBI triple. Junior Marc Perdios drove Sudol in with a groundout to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Tigers tacked on another run in the third and fifth innings to build their lead to 5-2 before scoring four more times in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Hinson reached on an error and got to third on a wild pitch and a stolen base. An intentional walk put runners on the corners and Schaus brought in a run with a single. Shaffer and Miller hit consecutive doubles for three more runs to make it a 9-2 ballgame.
