Baseball Beats Northeastern, 6-1; Advances To Beanpot Championship

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Nine different pitchers held Northeastern to one run and the Boston College baseball team scored five times in the sixth inning en route to a 6-1 Beanpot win against the Huskies Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The Eagles (14-20) will face the winner of Harvard-Massachusetts next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Fenway Park. Tickets for the event at America's Most Beloved Ballpark can be purchased here.
Senior Nate Bayuk picked up the win after pitching a scoreless sixth inning. Senior Garret Smith threw a perfect ninth by striking out the side. The staff combined to fan 11 Huskies while walking just one and allowing seven hits.
Freshman Nate LaPointe had season highs by going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while senior Matt Hamlet went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Marc Perdios was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Junior Anthony Melchionda had a pair of hits and classmate Andrew Lawrence drove in a pair.
BC got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second. Perdios and LaPointe hit consecutive singles with two outs in the inning and then Hamlet drove Perdios in with a double off the glove of a diving center fielder.
Northeastern tied the game in the top of the fourth with a run of its own. Jeff Dunlap drew a leadoff walk and Pete Castoldi singled on a hit and run to put runners on the corners. A 6-3 double play scored the run to tie it up but also ended any further threat.
Both teams failed to convert on great scoring opportunities in the middle of the game. BC had a pair in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the fifth while the Huskies had the bases loaded with one down in the top of the sixth. Bayuk induced a 4-6-3 double play to get away unscathed.
The Eagles' offense used that momentum and scored five times in the bottom half of the sixth to make it a 6-1 ballgame. Sophomore Matt McGovern, Smith and Melchionda each singled to load the bases to start the inning. Lawrence hit another single to center to score two runs and then a walk loaded them up again. LaPointe added a two-run single of his own through the left side to make it 5-1 and freshman Tom Bourdon brought in the final run with a sac fly.
Aaron Barbosa led Northeastern (11-22) at the plate by recording four of the team's seven hits. He was 4-for-4 with four singles.
