Charlottesville, Va. - The Boston College softball team completed a sweep of Virginia in its opening ACC series on Sunday afternoon at The Park. Home runs from sophomore Nicole D'Argento and junior Brittany Wilkins helped lift the Eagles (7-15, 3-0 ACC) past the Cavaliers (14-15, 0-3 ACC), 7-6.
D'Argento went 2-for-3 at the plate, drove in three runs and scored her second, game-winning run of the afternoon in the top of the seventh.
Wilkins batted .500 in four appearances in the batter's box, recorded two RBIs and scored a run in the win.
Junior Morgan Kidd (1-3) picked up her first win of the season by tossing 1.2 innings, walking two and striking out one batter.
Hawkins (0-1) allowed seven runs, two walks and struck out two in a complete game performance.
BC took a two run lead in the first. Wilkins drove in classmate Ali Lynette-Krech, who had singled to right, with her 11th home run of the year.
The Eagles extended their lead, 5-0, with three runs in the second. Junior Alison Kooistra led off with a single to right and moved up to second on a sac bunt from freshman Ronnie Mae Ayers. A wild pitch and walk from senior Carolyn Jones put runners on the corners for BC. D'Argento stepped up and belted a shot to left field for her fifth homer this season.
Virginia took the lead with six runs in the fourth. Bowdren hit a lead-off single to right and moved up to third following a pair of hits from Johnson and Hawkins, who was pinch run for by Didlake. Skinkis' single to left plated Bowdren and prompted a pitching change from BC. A wild pitch enabled Didlake to take home and Rodriguez was hit in the box, putting runners on the corners. Johnson scored when Williams reached on a fielder's choice, as did Rodriguez on Pittman's single to right. Pittman then stole second and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt, which allowed Williams to cross the plate. The Eagles struck out the next batter, but a double from Harris brought in Pittman to end the scoring.
Trailing in the top of the seventh, the Eagles scored two runs to complete the first sweep of an ACC series in school history. Freshman Chelsea LoBue singled down the left field line and advanced to third on D'Argento's double to left center. Lynette-Krech's sac fly plated moved the runners up, scoring LoBue to tie the game at six. With one out, senior Gemma Ypparila made enough contact to give the Cavs' shortstop handling the ball and D'Argento crossed home to put BC back on top, 7-6.
Boston College will resume conference play on March 26 at Virginia Tech. A Saturday doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon, with the third game to be played on Sunday at 1 p.m.
