Charlottesville, Va. - Freshman Tory Speer went five for seven at the plate, hit two home runs and drove in six runs as the Boston College softball team opened up its ACC season with a pair of wins over Virginia, 9-3 and 11-3, on Saturday afternoon at The Park.
Junior Ali Lynette-Krech matched the team-high four runs and batted a stellar .833 (5-for-6) on the day.
Allison Gage (2-6) earned both wins for the Eagles (6-15). In game one, the senior threw 5.1 innings of relief, struck out three, walked three and allowed one run. Gage returned with a complete game effort in game two, giving up three runs and walking two batters.
The Cavaliers' (14-14) pitching staff split their losses on the day. Mitchell allowed nine runs, walked three and struck out three in six innings of work in game one and Coates lasted 2.2 innings, gave up two runs, walked three and K-ed one batter in the second contest.
In game one, both sides posted a run in the first. Freshman Alana Dimaso drew a lead-off walk and moved up to third on a sac bunt and fielder's choice. Speer then registered her first RBI of the day with a single to left.
Virginia scored when G. Cipolloni walked to lead-off, stole second and hustled around the bases on a bunt.
Four straight walks enabled the Cavaliers to take a one run lead in the second, 2-1.
The Eagles broke the game open with four runs in the third. Lynette-Krech hit a one out double to right center and advanced to third following a walk by junior Brittany Wilkins and single up the middle from senior Gemma Ypparila. An error by the third baseman allowed Lynette-Krech to score and Speer to reach first, keeping the bases full. Sophomore Nicole D'Argento and junior Alison Kooistra then delivered back-to-back singles to left, plating one and two runs respectively, to push the score to 5-2.
Virginia added its last run in the bottom half of the frame when Harris singled, took second on an error and came around on another hit up the middle.
In the fifth, Speer doubled to right center, moved to third on an infield out and scored on a passed ball to bring the score to 6-3.
Wilkins completed the scorecard with a three-run homer in the sixth, driving in Dimaso and Lynette-Krech who had singled to reach safely.
In game two, BC took a two run lead in the first. D'Argento was hit by a pitch and Lynette-Krech bunted to reach safely. Wilkins drew another HBP to load the bases, before Ypparila plated D'Argento and advanced the runners on a sac fly to right. With Kooistra at bat, a wild pitch allowed Lynette-Krech to take home for the 2-0 advantage.
Virginia evened the game, 2-2, in the second inning.
Speer's first long ball of the day put BC back on top, 4-2.
G. Cipolloni reached on a walk, stole second and came in on a double to right to give the Cavs their final run in the fifth.
Seven runs from Boston College in the sixth ended the game. D'Argento hit her fourth homer of the year, bringing in senior Carolyn Jones who had doubled to left to start the inning. Lynette-Krech then doubled to left, was moved up on an illegal pitch and scored on a single from Wilkins. Ypparila then singled up the middle, putting two runners on for Speer to blast her second home run of the day.
Keeping the rally going, Kooistra was hit by a pitch and stole second. Freshman Ronnie Mae Ayers then walked and took second on a wild pitch. Junior Lizzy Ploen reached on a fielder's choice, with Kooistra getting called out at home. Jones then walked to load the bases and D'Argento brought in Ayers on a fielder's choice to end the scoring at 11-3.
The Eagles conclude their road trip against the Cavaliers on Sunday at noon.
