BROCKTON, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team won its first Beanpot since 2006 and its ninth overall as it defeated Northeastern, 9-3, Wednesday night at Campanelli Stadium.
Junior Mickey Wiswall and sophomore Anthony Melchionda both hit long three-run homers in the game. It was Wiswall's 12th of the season and Melchionda's fourth. Wiswall went 2-for-4 with two runs as did junior Matt Hamlet. Senior Robbie Anston was 3-for-5 with a double.
Four BC relievers combined to shut out the Huskies for the last five innings. Junior Kevin Moran threw 2.0 scoreless while sophomores Matt Brazis and Taylor Lasko and freshman Hunter Gordon each threw an inning.
Northeastern (7-18) was the first to score in the bottom of the first with a single run. Alan Pastyrnak singled with one out and after a fielder's choice, Frank Compagnone belted an RBI triple to the gap in left to give the Huskies the early edge.
The Eagles got that run back immediately in the top of the second. Freshman Matt Watson led off with a single to right and Melchionda moved him up to second with a sac bunt. Sophomore Andrew Lawrence then pulled a 1-0 pitch down the line and into the corner in right for an RBI triple of his own to tie the game.
BC put up five more runs in the third to take a commanding 6-1 lead. With one out, Hamlet and Wiswall hit consecutive singles to put runners on the corners and a wild pitch moved the runners up 90 feet to give BC a 2-1 lead. Senior John Spatola was swinging on a 3-0 count and hit the wall in left-center for an RBI double then Watson reached on a dropped pop up by the shortstop.
A double steal moved both Spatola and Watson into scoring position but they didn't need it as Melchionda crushed the next pitch over the 403-foot marker in center to extend the lead to five runs.
The Huskies got two of the runs back in the bottom half of the third when Matt Miller hit a homer after a leadoff walk to cut into the lead, 6-3.
BC added three more runs in the fourth to take the 9-3 lead. Anston went the opposite way for a leadoff double and after Hamlet hit a bloop single to put two men on, Wiswall jumped on the first pitch he saw and sent it well over the batter's eye in dead center field to make it 9-3.
The Eagles (20-17) now travel to Raleigh for the weekend for a critical ACC series against NC State. The series opener is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
