MIAMI - No. 13 Miami defeated the Boston College baseball team, 11-4, Sunday afternoon at Alex Rodriguez Park to take the ACC series opener.
Yasmani Grandal led the Hurricanes (10-4, 2-1 ACC) at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs and three RBI. Chris Pelaez and Nathan Melendres both had two hits and a double. Frankie Ratcliff hit a triple and drove in three runs.
Eric Erickson got the start on the mound and after giving up three runs in the first, settled in to pitch 4.0 innings. He allowed three hits and struck out four on a limited pitch count. Daniel Miranda got the win after pitching 3.0 innings from the bullpen and giving up an unearned run.
Sophomore Anthony Melchionda went 2-for-4 for the Eagles (6-8, 1-2) with two RBI. Senior John Spatola was 2-for-2 and hit by a pitch twice. Sophomore Brad Zapenas and freshman Matt Watson both had an RBI.
BC got it going right away with three runs in the top of the first. Senior Robbie Anston led off the game with a single and then sophomore Matt Hamlet reached on a sac bunt when Anston was safe at second. Junior Mickey Wiswall fought off numerous pitches and was eventually hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Melchionda drove in a run with a sac fly to right and then another hit batsman loaded the bases again. Zapenas produced another run with a sacrifice fly to the same spot and then Watson battled on an 0-2 count and ended up with an RBI single.
Some sloppy play by BC allowed Miami to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom half of the first. Zeke DeVoss led off and doubled when the left fielder misjudged a fly ball and a groundout moved him over to third. Scott Lawson got on base and got the run in on an error by the first baseman and then Grandal singled to put runners on first and second. Harold Martinez chopped a single over Wiswall's head at third for an RBI single and then Ratcliff hit the gap in right for two more runs and a triple.
The Hurricanes added two more runs in the third to extend the lead to 6-3. Miami loaded the bases with one out and Ratcliff got a run home when a fly ball dropped inside the left field line. Michael Broad then added an RBI single to give the `Canes a three-run advantage.
Miami added another run in the fourth on a Pelaez double with two outs to push the lead to 7-3.
BC got that run back in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Melchionda.
Miami increased the lead to six runs in the sixth inning when Grandal lifted a pitch into the wind and over the wall in center for a three-run homer to give the Hurricanes a 10-4 lead. In the seventh, Melendres scored on a sacrifice fly to the warning track in center while on second base to make it 11-4.
Boston College now returns home and is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to UConn for a 3 p.m. game.
