The Boston College lacrosse team soared to new heights on Saturday afternoon, defeating Virginia Tech, 14-9 to lift the team to a 5-0 record for the first time in the history of the program.
The Hokies fell to 2-5 with the loss.
The wet and windy weather could not deter the Eagles from a strong start, as four different players tallied goals to open the game. Seniors Lauren Costello and Mary Stinson, freshman Brooke Blue and sophomore Sam Taylor scored to put BC up 4-0 early on. Sophomore Kate Collins and Costello would add tallies after a VT goal at 23:26 to make it 6-1.
The Hokies fired off three straight scores between 15:51 and 6:17 before Blue scored two more goals for BC. Thanks to strong all around play, the Eagles were able to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Costello got the scoring started for Boston College in the second half, with goals at 28:49 and 28:07 to put the score at 10-5. The two teams would trade goals for the next 21-minutes, with Costello scoring another and junior Kristin Igoe notching two of her own, including a fantastic goal while sliding on the slick field. Blue would score her fourth goal of the game at 0:35 of the second half to give the Eagles a 14-9 victory.
Junior goalie Sheila Serafino made three saves for BC on the day, as the Eagles outshot the Hokies, 26-23.
The Eagles' win streak improves to five games, which is tied for the longest string of victories the team has recorded since 2003.
Senior Lauren Costello also moved closer to overtaking Jenna McCabe `09 on BC's all-time goals list. Costello has recorded 128 tallies in her BC career to put her in fifth place behind McCabe's 130. She is also only six assists away from passing Courtney Legath '05 on the Eagles' all-time list. Costello is in third-place with 60 helpers in her career, just behind Legath's 65.
Boston College will next travel to Holy Cross to take on the Crusaders, Wednesday, March 17 at 4:30 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
